Oregon School District Fires First Shot in 2011 War on Christmas

Here we go again. The Hillsboro School District Board resurrected the classic school calendar debate when a board member insisted on listing on the 2011-12 school calendars a “Christmas Break” instead of the more politically correct “Winter Break”. Even though the audience of 75 (mostly teachers) loudly voiced their disapproval of the measure it passed [...]

I have to agree with the board member here. Christmas isn't a religious holiday at all (well, at least it didn't start out that way). Nobody truly knows the date of Christ's birth, it's just the day that was set aside to celebrate his birth.

I truly do get offended when people post Merry X-Mas instead of Merry Christmas. Folks, the holiday wasn't named X-Mas. It not only offends me for my religious beleifs, but for pure laziness. People would rather substiute an X and a - for Christ. Every time I see someone write it, I just want to look at them and say "Wow, are we that lazy that we can't just write the extra 4 letters?" (Yup, lovin the smilies..lol)

Ok, brother, let's clear some things up:

1. Xmas is not an offensive term. See this link. It is actually a very sacred term.

2. Christmas is indeed a religious holiday (and a secular holiday too, it is both). It predates Christ in a very religious, Biblical sense. See this link.

You are right about the date of the birth of Christ. But that's hardly the point.

Be sure to listen to the Merry Podcast coming out later this month as we talk a bit about the history of Christmas in America. The so-called "war on Christmas" actually dates back more than 450 years on the continent. It has always been a divisive issue between those who observe it secularly and those who see in a sacred context.

I find it deliciously ironic that school boards in particular seem to swim in the political waters of Christmas the most. The fact that it is a secular and sacred term interchangeably seems to be lost on those in education. (And of course most in the profession of education are of one political bent, lending to these perpetual issues with things like Christmas).

It doesn't have to be complex.

Personally, I think schools should concentrate on doing what they're suppose to do rather than engaging in political see-saw battles that will never be resolved.

Well for starts I'm not your brother.

Secondly, I wasn't aiming to stir anything up, I simply said that I think it LAZY to not write out the entire word.

Sorry for misunderstanding you, sir (can I call you sir since the word brother is so offensive?).

I don't think when people write or say Xmas they are necessarily being lazy (though some could be, I suppose). It's a big world. Not everyone is American.

There are plenty of people out there who still look at the X in Christmas as a religious term conveyed with respect.

Likewise the term "happy holidays" is not offensive. Yet there are people out there who take offense at it because they believe it is an aversion to saying "Merry Christmas". That's nonsense.

Happy Holidays is an acceptable term. And so is Xmas.

I find it most discouraging that a School has time to vote on something like this... I cannot believe it is even a topic, but whatever, maybe if they worried a little more on teaching all the different ways people celebrate in just this country alone and worried a little less on what we call the break time maybe, just maybe children will grow up with a greater understanding. But, alas this is but a mare pipe dream, I went to a school board meeting not too long ago and thought may goodness is this a witch hunt? Teacher Unions mad at the board, the board mad at the Teachers Union, and not once did either side discuss the children the real reason both sides were there at least that is what I thought and one person even said to me why are you hear, you don't have kids, I was shocked, so it doesn't surprise me that this was even discussed but it sure saddens me that they have to bring Christmas into it at all... OK, OK, I'll get off my soap box now, thank you....
