To be fair, there's nothing wrong with saying "Happy Holidays". It isn't new and it isn't offensive and it isn't really a substitute for "Merry Christmas".

Christmas was established in the US as a national holiday because it is both a sacred and secular observance. The fight over Christmas is way, way old and pre-dates anything American. We've just really Americanized it with this bogus separation of Church and State argument, a phantom principle many think is in the Constitution but in reality is never actually even mentioned.

I'm all for being sensitive.

But like you, I think this is absurd.

I agree with all the above (on soapbox now).

What I dont understand is why is it okay to say Happy Kwanza or Happy whatever AS LONG AS IT IS NOT A CHRISTIAN celebration ?? I will use MERRY CHRISTMAS as the way I greet people always. I never say "Happy Holidays" or "Season's Greetings". I say Merry CHRISTmas to make a point. I know there are folks here on site who are offended if anything "religious"gets posted, but I think one of the things that really curdles my cream is that it is just FINE with some people to make athestic messaged movies but DONT MAKE ONE THAT IS GOD CENTERED !!! Prosyltizing is prosyltizing Grrrrr.......(off soapbox now).

We have had to start saying "Happy Holidays" to not offend others, which is hard for me because I love wishing people a Merry Christmas when the holidays roll around. I would never demand that anyone of any race or culture, who wants to display something so special to them, to take it down because it offends anyone else. There are every day displays of one's religion including Churches, Mosque's and even Temples! Very disheartening...
I agree with you. It's discouraging that while America boasts of allowing Free Speech, it's sort of pick-and-choose as to who actually gets to speak freely (And I'm thinking 'outdoor displays' here as a type of Free Speech). You would think that Free Speech has to be free for everyone....or it's not Free Speech. I can think of some examples of Free Speech that were allowed (art, primarily) that was pretty much guaranteed to offend anyone who viewed it. So if something like that is allowed, why not Christmas displays no matter if they are sacred of secular. I'm sorry to say this, but I feel that our politicians are getting a little too much like our news reporters; they are going too much for the 'shock' value.

Well I know here in Canada, it is published in elementary schools that kids should be reminded not to say Merry Christmas but Happy Holidays... here people find it offensive.
