Target to open at Midnight on BF!

Just got this on Twitter:
http://ow.ly/7ct04

NEW YORK -- As the run-up to holiday shopping intensifies, Target Corp. said Friday that its stores will open at midnight on Thanksgiving Day for the first time. That's four hours earlier than last year.
The stores will stay open for 23 hours and close at 11 p.m. Friday, November 25. Target spokeswoman Susan Kahn said the change was a response to customers' demands.
Retailers have expanded their Black Friday hours each year recently.
The season's kickoff overtook Thanksgiving Day last year, when most Sears Holdings Corp. opened most Sears and Kmart stores Thanksgiving morning for the first time. Toys R Us stores opened at 10 p.m. Some stores in Gap Inc.'s Old Navy, Gap and Banana Republic chains also opened Thanksgiving Day last year; the company began operating stores on Thanksgiving in 2009.
Wal-Mart Stores Inc., whose supercenters already operate around the clock, opened most of its other stores by midnight Thanksgiving evening last year.
Target, which operates more than 1,700 stores, is based in Minneapolis.

I just read in another thread that Kohls will be opening at midnite too !!! Wow....this Black Friday thing is getting out of control. I also enjoy Black Friday shopping but gone are the days of waking up early. Now we will be getting up from the Thanksgiving dinner table and going right out to the store!!!!! It's getting a little crazy!!!

I guess this is the wave of the future...last year walmart was open at 6pm on thanksgiving day here in Ga. I guess target and the rest may think opening at midnite will at least be technically waiting for "black friday" I can tell you I want be there at that time or that whole weekend to tell you the truth!

Jeff Westover has disabled reputation
It's a desperate, passing fad folks. All the surveys are showing Black Friday is waning in popularity. For right now they are blaming it on the economy but I think it is because online retailers have a real edge during the week of Thanksgiving when folks are at home and can shop 24/7 with pies in the oven.

Mark my words, this isn't going to work. In fact, in coming years you're going to see the trend of opening at midnight give way to staying open on Thanksgiving Day to going back to early Friday openings...to eventually business as usual.

The world is going online and smart, profit making retailers will not push the hours like this in the future, I think.

Here in Salt Lake I've had to manage midnight openings at a local mall for the past several years (no more). It is dangerous, sometimes violent -- and so not worth the expense of paying employees and security for crowds so thick you end up losing more product to theft than to sales.

I don't see this lasting.
