US Govt. Taxing Christmas Trees??

http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2011...tmas-tree-tax/

The US government recently created a board to promote the Christmas tree industry, then taxed the sale of Christmas trees to pay for the board!

Sad, just sad! Tax, tax, tax; its all they know....

First they try every form to take the Christ out of Christmas and now they want to fleece it... Don't they get enough already with all the sales tax that is generated during this time of year???

Well now, we should make some sort of agreement here. We get to call them "CHRISTMAS" trees free and clear, and if so then we'll pay the tax. I have nothing against "Holiday trees", but I'd rather pay my tax on the Christmas ones, thanks.

Otherwise, I agree that citizens of the USA already pay enough taxes. What will they tax next? Tissues? (maybe I'd better keep quiet; someone in Congress might hear me.....)

Let's not get the facts mixed up here, folks. The Christmas tree industry ASKED for this. They want to be promoted by the government like milk is or like beef is. They have lobbied for this because, in their view, it gives them credibility over the artificial Christmas tree makers if they have the feds saying "buy real Christmas trees".

Personally, I don't trust the government to do anything right when it comes to business and that this effort could be better done through an industry association. If I were a small grower (and I'd like to be), I'd be TICKED. But their goal isn't to market Christmas trees by themselves -- it is to get the GOVERNMENT to say "buy real trees". That is ALL this is about. Period.

The government loves to create more government. In their weird way of thinking, fifteen cents a tree to fund their program is a win for everyone.

The sticky thing here, you watch, won't be that the government is taxing trees or that the real Christmas tree people want it.

It will be that the government is now going to use the word "Christmas" -- offically -- in a marketing context. They will be ENDORSING Christmas.

And groups won't stand for it. There will be lawsuits and they will be based on the separation of Church and State. You watch.

It is a whole new chapter in the tired War on Christmas.

Truthfully, I think the people who buy real trees will buy real trees - the people who buy fake, will buy fake and what the government does or does not endorse won't make the slightest bit of difference when it comes to Christmas trees.

Bleh.

That's kind of what the smaller operators in the industry are saying. They would rather do their own marketing. At the end of the day, it is all about money.

I toyed with the idea of investing in a high quality fake tree, but it would destroy an age-old family tradition of going to the farmer's market, talking with the tree farmers and buying our Christmas tree. Every year, we go to the farmer's market and meet a new group of Christmas tree farmers. We don't just buy our tree and go home, we talk with them and walk around and get tips about making your own real garland off of the discarded tree branches they had to cut off the bottom of our tree or they tell us about their farm and how long it took them to grow the giant 15 footer they have. Thanks to this tradition, I know the difference between a Fraiser Fir and a Blue Spruce! I <3 real trees...their smell and their unique beauty is just wonderful to me. I will ALWAYS be a supporter of real Christmas trees!
