I was surprised today to discover that the original "The Stingiest Man in Town" (1956) starring Basil Rathbone is out on DVD! It's a musical adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" that was originally broadcast live and in color. No complete kinescope (a film record made of a live broadcast by filming the image on a TV monitor) was known to exist, but this year a complete B&W kinescope was found of the live telecast and released on video. I just discovered the sountrack CD a few months ago, and was really disappointed that there was no surviving video of the broadcast to see. Now there is, and it'll be on our doorstep before Christmas! Yay!
We just watched this tonight. If you think you don't need to see another version of "A Christmas Carol," think again. Unique and amazing musical adaptation. Ignore the technical limitations of the kinescope and enjoy the music, lyrics, book, and performances. It's astounding to think of a production on that scale being broadcast live with no editing and no retakes. If you know the musical only from the album, it's an even greater experience seeing the songs performed in context. This one is going to be a watch-it-every-year (or maybe more than once!) DVD. What great luck that they found a complete kinescope and produced a DVD so everyone can see it! It's really quite an experience.
