Lets have some christmas stories

Christmas threads are pretty thin of late and as this is a christmas forum,i will start one,lets hear something thats happen to you during christmas past or present that stands out for you,heres mine;

I remember getting my first christmas tree when i was around 11,my parents never done anything at christmas so i dont know how i pursuaded my mum to get a tree for me,i got the tree from the local high street with some tinsel and fairy lights,i set it up that night and i remember how excited i was just looking at it,i knew there wasnt going to be any presents underneath it on christmas day but that did not bother me i was just happy that i had a christmas tree,i remember getting my pillow and duvet cover and i decided to sleep downstairs next to my new christmas tree and i just gazed at it until i fell asleep,that was around 25 years ago but i still remember it well.

My best memories of childhood Christmases:

We lived next door to my maternal grandparents. My grandmother would put all of the gifts under the tree on Christmas Eve morning & spend the day cooking. I loved the excitement of getting dressed in our new Christmas clothes (Sunday best) & walking to their house. We were so excited that we couldn't eat dinner, knowing that the gifts were waiting for us! All nine of us gathered around the kitchen table meant for six---though three of us were little kids (one, four, & seven, just before my grandfather passed away). After we opened gifts there, we would go to my paternal grandparents house to open gifts, then home to bed. I remember looking out the back window of the car on the way home, thinking I could see Santa & his sleigh.

Good times!

Goodness, I've so many memories it's a little overwhelming. One that stands out is getting a slide one year. Our house at the time was pretty small and Santa had decided to put it up in the kichen (just for the week), however it finished at the front door in the hall. Me and my cousin spent the Christmas week sliding from the kichen to the front door. Alot of my favorite memories however are not of Christmas itself, but the lead up. Putting up the decorations with my parents, shopping trips, the feel of the town centre just before christmas. It's hard to describe a feel or an atmosphere, but I'm sure most people on this forum know what I mean.

Great thread...thanks for keeping it about Christmas!
We never had a real tree that I could remember, it was always artificial, and when I got to be college age and had a boyfriend, I asked my mom if we could have a real tree. I thought it was so romantic to go out and pick out a tree, but Mom and Dad were not that pleased- thought real trees were messy and tippy, etc. But they gave in and said I could get one. Well........ low and behold, my little nephew, about two years old who was visiting in the days before Christmas pulled the tree down on himself as being a novice tree picker, I picked a lousy one! It was very lopsided. We could hear a little voice saying , "help, help!" Ornaments went flying...Mom started cursing in Italian and needless to say, we were back to an artificial tree the following year and thereafter!

Will Never Forget Her

I was going to college in far western Kansas (Colby) and headed home for Christmas Break. Lost most college kids, I didn't have a lot money other than enough to get home. I had gone about 300 miles when I got to the Kansas Turnpike and had gotten about a mile from the toll booth when both my right tires went flat. So here I am still 500 miles from home with only one spare, enough money for gas the rest of the way and one of tires of was totally ruined (I ran over roofing nails and metal straps).

This was before cell phones (remember those days) so I decided to walk back to the toll both and see if someone could help. I knocked on the door of one of the booths and I explained what was going on to lady working the toll booth. I asked her if could use the phone to make a collect call home to my parents. After giving me a couple of strange looks, she said OK. She heard me talking to my Mom trying to figure out what do. She looked at me and said, "let me talk to your Mom". I handed the phone to her and stepped out of the booth because there was not really room for two people in there.

They talked for about 5 mins. and then she called me back in and said this. "He is what we are going to do. There is a Sears store about 40 miles away and they sell tires. I get off work in an hour, you take the tires off your car, put them in my truck, and I will drive you to Sears where your Mom has called the auto parts manager and given them her credit card number and they will put two new tires on your rims and then I will bring you back to your car". So off we went to Sears and I got new tires and went back to my car put them on and started back toward home.

I thanked the lady over and over and told he I wished I had some money to give her but if she would give me her name address I would send her gas money for her trouble. She would not give me her name or address and said she wanted nothing from me other than to know I would make it home for Christmas and to give my Mom a kiss.

I will never, ever forget the lady and I think of her every Christmas. If you worked for the State of Kansas in a toll booth in 1988, and helped a kid out with two flats on a cold winter day a few days before Christmas, all I can is Thank You and God Bless.
