When is it time to switch seasonal decorations?

Just curious to hear some other opinions:

I'm mostly talking about outdoor decorations here, but I guess this applies to all seasonal decorations in general. Last year, I put out Fall outdoor decorations on the last day of September. I left up the Fall decorations all through October and took them down the Sunday/Monday before Thanksgiving. Then the day after Thanksgiving, we launched all of our Christmas decorations (Christmas lights and wreaths, window clings and lawn decorations). Those stayed out until Monday, January 2nd. (indoor Christmas decorations stayed up till the end of January though).

This is the first year we've done summer decorations, and we put those out on the last day of May. How long should summer decorations stay out? Do you take them down Labor Day weekend? Late August or Mid September?

My wife suggested we immediately take down summer decorations and put up Fall decorations. Does anyone here do that? I don't know if Fall decorations should go out till late September...and for those that do Fall decorations, do you put up your Winter/Holiday decorations immediately upon taking down your Fall decorations, or is there a gap in there somewhere? When do you guys usually take down your Fall decorations?

I think whatever you feel like doing is fine. With me, by mid August I just cannot wait and I put my indoor fall decorations out. September would probably be more appropriate but I don't care, I am ready for them in August! Makes things feel a bit cooler.

My outdoor fall decorations start going out in September and by October 1st I add Halloween to it. Same with the inside of my house with Halloween decor.

I am way too early for Christmas but I start decorating inside the house November 1st then add the outside decorations a week before Thanksgiving. It seems like a lot of people do the same, in my neighborhood, as far as outdoor decor goes.

My fall & Halloween decor is put up Oct. 1st and I switch to Christmas decor no later than November 15th. Sometimes I get excited and put stuff out earlier though!

We start to put the Summer items away around the middle of September and start slowly with adding a harvest type wreath on the door, then start adding some of the decorative type gourds and mini pumpkins on the porch.

Then around October 1st, I go up in the attic and start pulling down all of the inside fall/ Halloween decorations and put them up. About October 15th, I go full blown into the Halloween decorations outside and leave them up and lit untill the end of the 1st week of November. I sort of switch back to the fall theme.

Then starting at the end of November, I put all the fall stuff away and then I go full blown into Christmas!!! I typically leave my all my Christmas decorations up and lit all the way into the middle of January when I start to take them down; slowly....If it is snowing or snowy outside, I will leave them up and lit longer! Usually by the 1st week into February, everything is put away untill the next Holiday..... As a footnote here, I am the only one, in my entire development that leaves their Christmas lights lit that long and also decorates their entire house for Halloween! Hey, I have that Holiday spirt all thru the year....

My wife and I have a peanuts theme that we display through various times of the year. On Easter, we have a cross that reads "He is Risen" and a Snoopy and Woodstock yard art where they're hunting for Easter eggs. In between Easter and football season/fall, I really do not display that much in the yard. On Memorial day I lower my flagpole to half mast and on fourth of July I’ll display US flags in various areas. I’ve been meaning to create a Peanuts Yard art with Charlie Brown pitching to Lucy in Texas Rangers uniforms, but I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. I did create a yard art with Charlie Brown running to kick a ball that Lucy is holding...both wearing Dallas Cowboys uniforms.

On October 1st, that is when it starts to get busy. I have a scarecrow that I display (it reads "howdy fall" with a bale of hay). Since I live in Austin, we try to welcome spring as kindly as possible. I also put out a yard art of Linus and Sally in a pumpkin patch, startled at the possible appearance of the great pumpkin (it’s really Snoopy's shadow rising out of the ground, of course). After Halloween, I'll take the Peanuts thing down and put up a Thanksgiving Yard art that displays Snoopy as a pilgrim and Woodstock as an Indian. That'll stay up (along with the Peanuts/Dallas Cowboys yard art) until Thanksgiving Day.

I have a tradition every year to begin decorating the outside of our house, breaking for an early Thanksgiving dinner and again the traditional Cowboys game. I'll work at hanging up lights and displaying different types of yard art throughout the evening. My prized display is a nativity that I bought from Hobby Lobby. Has taken me several years to collect those nativity pieces…every year after Christmas (when they mark things down 50-75%) I’d buy a piece or two to add to the collection. I think last year I got decorated shortly after midnight. I love decorating for Christmas, but I find it a tumultuous chore to take it down, which I typically do the first weekend of January (our Home Owner's association is pretty strict about that).

So, to answer the initial question in the thread, it really is really your preference when to begin displaying things. In some regard, decorating outside gives people around you a reminder of wondrous things to come. When I was a kid, the house that decorated itself on or around Thanksgiving brought me excitement in knowing that Chirstmas was around the corner.

That stated, I try not to display things too early or leave it up too late as it may take away the significance on why it is I'm displaying it. We’ve had several neighbors that have joyfully commented on our Christmas display every year and how they look forward to seeing it, which obviously provides me with more motivation to get it done. If I decorated the house way too early or left everything up way past the time I should, then perhaps the neighbors wouldn’t appreciate it all as much (just my assumption).

Well, we don't do a lot of decorating unless it's Christmas. We put our lights up the last weekend of October, have all the powerstrips laid out and ready to go, and the decorations stashed in the garage....

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving, I spend a couple of hours plugging everything up and laying out the decorations. Our lights are on the night before Thanksgiving.

I wish we had more yard decor.

Summer for me is flower beds and vegie garden.
I usually will put out the fall stuff when the summer gardens are done and the vegies are in. Depending on the weather that can be anywhere from Labour day to the start of October.
The fall comes naturally too with all those colored leaves!
I also will put out pumpkins and mums.
But the main event for me is Christmas!
