Putting Away Christmas

The boo-hoos are all over Facebook this week. All my friends are bemoaning the post-holiday return to work, the taking down of the Christmas décor and the end of the holiday season. One friend even likened it to a death. Really? This is the same person who only days ago rang in the new year [...]

"...What is it about putting away Christmas that depresses everyone? What ever happened to that great Dicken’s sentiment about keeping Christmas in your heart every day of the year? Is that what Christmas is to you – just decorations, songs and frosted cookies?

Sorry. I don’t get the whole Christmas blues thing...."

from the article

I don't know if I am the only one who feels this way reading this article, but the way I feel is not about just putting away Christmas decorations. It's the way somehow the world feels more magical, people that don't usually say much to you now have smiles on their faces and greet you. You hear Christmas music almost everywhere you go and everything is brightened by lights and decorations to make things cheery. The trees are a focal point in our house for more than a month and a half, you get attached to their beauty and when they leave it is darker, drabber place. Taking down the decorations is a reminder to a darker less friendly world most of us don't want to remember. My PCB's deal more with my family heading back to work and school, I feel like I never get enough quality time with my wife and kids and when Christmas leaves I go back to seeing them a couple hours a day, I see people I don't like at work more than the people I love the most. It may be an anticipation thing for some for next year, but I grasp at those last glimpses of Christmas, knowing in 10 months they will be back, but not wanting to relinquish this newest of Christmases past.

Well said, Xmas. It is NOT just about decorations. For me "putting away Christmas" as you say leaves the world a darker place. My blues, as all know, come from the fact that I worry so much if I will even have family left next year. My sister will turn 70 in December and my brother-in-law will be 73. Not ancient for either but still getting older. One of the happiest Christmases I ever had was the last one I had with David. I didn't know then it was my last one with him, but still you just never know. I guess Christmas being over brings all my anxiety to the surface about the next year. It is MUCH more than putting decorations away.

I agree with both of you on this. I read this article the first thing I thought was "no one is saying its just about the decorations." I also found it kind of harsh.

It is about how life goes "back to normal." There is no lights, sounds, smells, happy faces, Christmas music everywhere etc. I hold Christmas in my heart, very much so. Its just the wonderful things about Christmas accompany that.

Sometimes just thinking, remembering or knowing Christmas is in my heart isn't enough. You get used to seeing the beautiful parts of the whole Christmas season and all that goes along with it. Its hard to just stop that and not see it for 11 months. I get what the article writer was trying to say, but not all of us are happy to put it away. I don't view it as a chore or annoying to put all the decorations back. It feels somewhat sad/difficult during these winter months to not see the beautiful tree lit each day (esp during boring January).

We're getting a LOT of feedback on this article. Some of it pretty harsh (which I think is a good thing). The one unknown to me --- and to all of us -- is what the writer of the article was seeing on Facebook. I think some here might be thinking this piece is an "attack" on those here only because the article feeds here for discussion. I would just point out that distinction.

I have forwarded the emails to the author for comment. Let's see if she responds.
