My Dog Sam
Dear Abby, I too was picked on when I was a child and I too turned to our dog Queenie. She always gave me love and she always listened. Bless you.
My daughter is away at college in Arizona(NAU) She is a Freshman, and 3,000 miles away from home(MA) She has been calling me on the phone crying her eyes out, hysterical and wanting to come home. I know this is normal, The same thing happened to me. Does anyone have any suggestions? Has anyone else been through this with their child(ren) I'm getting desperate....
A friend of mine had this happen with her son actually and she did the best to stay calm and not cry with him...Let your daughter know that this is just a stepping stone in life that she and many go through... let her know you are there for her of course, only a phone call away and the "homesickness" will subside in time. She will have many of these moments Im sure, and all you can do is listen to her. Hope things get better for her
I went through that when I went away to college in 1984. I get homesick easily. I moved to FL from NJ a year ago. I'm 41 years old and yesterday I was bawling on the phone to my mother saying how miserable I am down here in FL and I want to come home.
"MrsH, you're brilliant (and yes, quote me on that)." - Jeff Westover
It goes away with time. Some people handle it better than others. Im don't get upset, but I do get very home sick. It goes away after a while.
She needs to focus her mind on other things. Work, school, fun, friends. Not home and not family. If she is really bad off, setup a video conference with her and see if that helps. Ease off and maybe she will be on her own?
Not Good News....she Has Withdrawn From Her School And Will Be Flying Home Within The Next Few Days. I Tried To Have Her Focus On Other Things, But She Was So Focused On Being Away From Her Family And Home That She Would Not Let Herself Make That Her Temporary Home. She Has Lots Of Friends There, And Was Going Out Almost Every Night....i Just Don't Understand.
I haven't had my eldest do this to me yet but I remember being about 18 and throwing a bit of a fit with my Dad. He just told me to forget about myself and get to work. I said ok and that was that. Different with girls, tho.
Arizona is a pretty stark change from where she is coming from. I live in Utah and I see how it affects people who come here from other places. Yeah, we have mountains but no trees whatsoever and it is just, so, well, different. Also, weather has a huge bearing on folks. Arizona won't have the seasons she is used to. When you couple all that with the pressures of college and the changes that naturally occur at that time of life...well, she just might not yet be ready.
Being away from home isn't for everyone! Not everybody can do it! The furthest I have ever lived away from where I grew up is where I'm living now...2 miles away!!! Oh wait...I did live 5 miles away one time!! Lol! I'm happy where I'm at & I would be sad if I had to go away. I'm sure I would get use to being away, but it's harder at 18. I'm sure everything will work out just fine for your daughter in the long run. Goodluck! Hang in there!
