Thank you all for a great response. Some of these I have heard of and a couple that I haven't. It gives me something new to watch this year.

Oooh!! Good to know, thanks Courtney!!

I'll definitely buy a copy, but there's something special about watching it on tv during the season!! =]

I love that one, too ... I have the DVD, which also has the Thanksgiving and Halloween Garfield specials.

As a child of the late 60s and 70s, I love Christmas specials and while I have many on DVD, like someone else mentioned, I like to watch them when they air on TV, too. Fun knowing that a lot of other folks are watching the same show at the same time.

A more recent Christmas special I really enjoy is "Yes, Virginia." Fine animation and a nice retelling of the story.

One I remember that I'd like to see again is the animated Little Rascals Christmas Special. It's influences are Gift of the Magi and and the movie Holiday Affair with Robert Mitchum and Janet Leigh.

I've not seen it on TV in forever, but you can watch it on YouTube.

Twas the night and Yes Virginia are two of my favourites and I loved these when I was a child. They don't air over here so I always look forward to reading them over the holidays. You all have inpired me to get copies on DVD, it will be great to share with my children. I agree with some of you that nothing beats getting the unexpected surprise of them on the TV.

I also look forward to old animations like Rudolph ,Frosty, Jack Frost etc. Christmas just wouldn't be the same without them !!

I am with you on the Garfield, love it!
I wish they would feature the Simpsons Christmas special, it was their first whole episode.

Christmas Eve on Sesame Street!!

This was ALWAYS a part of my Christmas celebration from the time I was a wee little Sunshine. I love every part of it! Even when I got older - our local PBS channel would play it on Christmas Eve and I would watch it as I put the finishing touches on Christmas preparations. I can't tell you the amount of gifts I've wrapped with Big Bird in the background.

Then, one year, they replaced it with "Elmo Saves Christmas". Oh sure, Elmo might be cute but he's no Big Bird. I was SO distressed by this massive betrayal of my Christmas tradition that I *ahem* seem to have mentioned it to a few people - a few HUNDRED times because the next Christmas season I received at least a dozen copies of Christmas Eve on Sesame Street!

When I see the phrase "Christmas special", I take that to mean a one-off show, not one of the more regularly aired shows. With that in mind, I'd have to say my choice would be one of the older Andy Williams Christmas specials. I wish they would release them all on video.
