Family Traditions

What traditions do you have that your grandparents did, your parents did and now you do?

For my family it is what foods we prepare and enjoy. Croquet's, Olie Bollen, boterkoek, and more, are treats eaten mainly between Christmas and New Years. (sometimes we cheat and have them in the summer!) For us they are an important part of our celebrations. The recipes I use have been passed down from my Oma, and I am sure from hers before that.

So share what is important to your celebrations.

I think tradition is one of the things that make Christmas so special. Family traditions connects you to loved ones and brings back the nostalgia of Christmases past.

When I was little we always listened to Mickey's Christmas Carol every christmas eve before bed. I now watch the DVD version with my own children.

We always baked a ham on christmas eve, halfway through we would take it out and it was always my job to put cloves in and top with sliced pineapple. I still do this now and the smell always transports me back in time to my mum's kitchen. We also made Pastels which are a type of corn maize pastry filled with minced beef, capers, olives and it makes me feel really christmassy now when I prepare them.

My dad would put the Christmas wreath on the front door on the first Sunday in Advent ... I do that, too. I also learned from him, when decorating the tree, the lights go on first, then the garland, then the ornaments.

Going to the grandparent's homes for a meal & gift exchange. When I was little, we did it on Christmas Eve, now we do it on Christmas Day. Then I was the grandchild, now I'm the parent! Someday I'll be the grandparent (goodness...) & I've proclaimed that I don't care when they come, as long as we do it sometime between Thanksgiving & New Year's Day! We only have one child, so we'll work around her schedule.

Christmas Ball 3 Traditions

I am Italian and our traditions involved baking lots of cookies to have to share with company and family. We always celebrated Christmas as adults only on Christmas Eve with the immediate family. We still follow this tradition even though both parents are deceased now. We don't exchange gifts except to the children as our family is so large. Also because 2 sisters and I have Dec. birthdays that we remember each other with a small gift. We all do mail each other Christmas Cards. We also try to out do each other in the dessert area. I have 3 sisters so as you can magine it is hard sometimes since we are all good cooks. We rotate the event between our homes so no one is stuck having i each year. We contribute to the evening meal with side dishes. But the main thing is that we are all together enjoying our time with each other. Caroling

My families recipes have been carried down through the generations. Every year we help my grandma cook her dressing, sweet potato pie, and her collard greens. We also make my moms macaroni and cheese recipe. I want to pass these recipes on to my future children.

When we cook the whole family plays a part. My brothers and I help to grate the cheese for the macaroni. I wash the dishes and I clean the greens. One of my brothers mixes the dressing. Grandma is an early riser so she gets up to peel the potatoes for the potato salad and mashed potatoes. My mom cooks the turkey and cuts the ham. And, even for the things I didn't mention, we all work as a team to make the holidays happen. I'm smiling right now just remembering the laughter in the kitchen as we all crack jokes.

One of our traditions is getting our Christmas tree on my brothers birthday. Their birthday is December 15. Some years my brothers and I cook and decorate ginger bread cookies on Christmas eve. We always pray over the meal during the holidays. Sometimes one of my little brothers will say the prayer.

Cut out sugar cookies! My mom always made them when I was a kid and now I make them with my kids and husband. If my mom is feeling up to it even she will help decorate them too. I even have some of the cookie cutters that my mom used.

My grandmother used to make an awesome FruitCake. Its nothing like the kind you find in the stores and hers is the only one that I would ever eat. Well I found her recipe and I am thinking about making it this year.

Sounds like my parents' fruitcake! Friends and neighbors would put in requests for slices each year before the cakes were even made! Mom and Dad always made the cakes Thanksgiving morning and let them "ripen" in the basement fridge until nearly Christmas.

My parents never left us open gifts on Christmas Eve, we had to wait till Christmas morning. I did the same with my children and they are doing the same with my grandchildren.

I started when my kids were little to always have Christmas music playing Christmas morning and still do. Also, my kids have Christmas music playing in the morning while kids are opening up their gits.
