Happy Victoria Day, to our friends in Canada on Monday

I know our friends in Canada have Victoria Day on Monday. I'm not sure what it is, if you tell us what this day is, so we can celebrate with all of you.

Hi Deb - thanks for the thread starter.

Victoria Day is celebrated on the first Monday preceding May 25th. It is a statutory holiday throughout all of Canada except the Atlantic provinces (New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island).

Victoria Day falls on the second to last Monday in May, which is usually the third weekend. It falls on the weekend preceding Memorial Day in the United States. Some cities celebrate with public picnics or fireworks. Others enjoy the first long weekend in the spring and welcome the chance to admire the gardens with flowers whispering “summer is coming”.

Others find an excuse to party, rest, relax, slip away to open their cottages or visit family, etc.

It's purpose is to honour Queen Victoria whose birthday in the UK is actually celebrated in June.
