This thread is from an idea on our Halloween countdown thread. (If you love that spooky day, check out the countdown-We'd love to see you there!) The idea is to collaborate on a spooky story, with each person adding to the story by picking up where the previous author left off. It could be one sentence or two to three, but probably not much more than that per post, unless you just really have a great idea. :)

It's all about having fun, so don't worry about how good a writer you are, or what you say; we're all friends and family here on MMC and no one will criticize or make fun.

But, please remember this is a family site! Spooky is great. Funny is good. Vulgar and gory...not so much.

I'm trying to think of a first sentence to get us going, and will post below. If you think of one before I do, please post!!!

Have fun!

She feared going to sleep; the uncertainty of not knowing if she would once again be awakened by the nameless apparitions that so often tormented her.

All of a sudden there was another loud crack of thunder and the accompanying lighting lit up the room.

The brief illumination brought with it the revelation that she was not alone; she saw, for just a moment, the one whom she dreaded. He was different from the others, as he was the only spirit who seemed to bring with him that sense of dread, possessing such a strong aura of malcontent. Thankfully, as the lightening dissipated, the specter faded with it.

She wasn't sure if the creature had just been her imagination or if her dream was actually coming true. As she laid her head down on the pillow though, she clutched the rosary that was around her neck a little tighter.

We did something like this in the Games section a while back. We would copy & paste the last version, then add the new stuff at the end in bold. The next poster would copy & paste, change the last to non-bold, then type the new stuff in bold again.

Or maybe I'm trying to complicate it too much. LOL You won't hurt my feelings AT ALL if you guys don't want to do it that way. cheesy

The only action her body was willing, grudgingly, to take was to pull the flimsy sheet over her head. She knew, of course, that this would provide her with scant protection from whatever could make a sound like that, but little else could be done in her current state of mind.

Today, I realized that a lot of y'all post with your phones, and my idea would make that difficult. I apologize for trying to make things difficult. Please carry on as we started. I'm liking this!

After what seemed like an eternity, Susan gathered the courage needed to peek at the door from under the sheets to see...nothing. The frightening thumping sound had also stopped, and the storm was subsiding. After a few minutes, rational thought had begun to tell her that it was just the wind and her imagination. "Of course, that's all it could have been! Silly me!", she thought, though still not completely convinced.

Somehow, she managed to fall asleep. The morning sunlight, as it usually does, brought new perspective to Susan's frightening evening. She was almost able to dismiss the paralyzing fear she felt the night before...almost.

Part of her morning routine was to share a quick coffee with Julia, her next door neighbor. When the conversation turned briefly to the previous night's storm, Susan asked if Julia had seen anything unusual last night. "Like what?", asked Julia, a bit perplexed by the odd question.

Susan decided there was no way to rationally explain what she was talking about. "Oh, nothing. It was just jitters from the late storm. So, what are your plans for this afternoon?" The change of subject allow Julia to launch into her coming day, while Susan smiled distractedly, worried about the approaching night.

Later, as the last few slips of daylight disappeared from between the trees, Susan's anxiety level increased. Despite her efforts to convince herself how unlikely it was that there was a presence in her house, she found herself looking for a reason to visit her parents' home.

A quick call to her mom's cell phone dashed those hopes, however. Her parents were away at a conference her dad was attending. She even considered going to a hotel, but that wasn't a viable long-term option. How could she afford to live in a hotel from now on? No, whatever was going on in her home had to be confronted.

This resolve fortified her courage, and she entered her house, hoping her aforementioned resolve wouldn't be tested.

After a half hour of nothing happening, she began doing things to "normalize" the situation. She turned on the TV, popped some popcorn, called Julia to make plans for tomorrow's coffee break, etc. Finally, she knew, she had to rest for the busy day tomorrow. She couldn't bring herself to go to the bedroom, though. She decided to sleep on the couch with the TV & lamps on. Surely, that would keep the specter at bay.
