Christmas Essentials
Christmas is ageless. It has been observed in one form or another since the beginning of recorded history -- even before the birth of Jesus Christ. With such a rich and diverse history, time has eroded, distorted, twisted and confused the fundamental elements that lay at the core of Christmas observance. Some call this progress. But Christmas, unlike matters of science, was never intended to change or "evolve". Here we explore these essentials of the season: what it means, where it began, and how it impacts us. Much of this information is not new. But for a world grown fond of making sacred things secular, these details surprise, delight and inspire.

"Little Merry Christmas"......
Here’s how the publisher described this little Christmas book when it was published in 1913:
Quote:
|
“From the moment she alights, one wintry night, at the snow-piled station of Oatka Center, little Mary Christie begins to carry sunshine and happiness into the frosty homes, and still frostier hearts, of its inhabitants. How Lem Perkins, her crusty old uncle, together with the entire village, is led into the delectable kingdom of Peace and Goodwill by the guiding ha | ... [Read More]

“Santa’s Surprise Party”...
“Santa’s Surprise Party” by Gladys Hyatt Sinclair
From Saint Nicholas magazine, December 1908
’Twas a glad Christmas eve, and all over the world,
With reindeer and sleigh dear old Santa had whirled.
No one was forgotten or slighted by him;
Each stocking was bulging and crammed to the brim.
“There!” cried the old saint as he stopped at his door,
“I’ve made all the little ones happy once more!
But the rest of the night will be lonely, I fear;
Why—what is this wonderful racke... [Read More]

Counter Point: Why There...
By Anonymous
Consider the following:
1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.
2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total -... [Read More]

Home Alone (Movie Review)
By Amy S. Jorgensen
What would the holidays be without family-oriented Christmas movies? Back in 1990, a little movie called Home Alone opened in theaters and became as much a part of family traditions as Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Kids and adults both are drawn to the film, but why? What is it about Home Alone that draws audiences even ten years after its initial release?
Written by John Hughes (The Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink), whose high school comedies of the eighties suc... [Read More]

The Gift My Brother...
By Gary E. Anderson
In the first years after my brothers, sister, and I left home, there were several Christmases in which our ability to give fell far short of our desire. In fact, we often found ourselves getting very creative if we were going to give any Christmas presents at all. But those early Christmases also contained some of the finest gifts I've ever received, and one of those was the gift my brother Jim thought he couldn't give.
Jim had chosen a difficult road, work... [Read More]

Boxing Day
By Sarita Mehra
Last December, as I was planning where to spend Christmas lunch, my roommate came to me with a puzzled look on her face. She showed me a flyer from a local English-themed pub advertising their celebrations for Boxing Day
There’s a large community of English and Canadians in South Florida, but it seemed December 26, Boxing Day, was practically a secret club. My roommate mused over patrons to the pub donning boxing gloves and ‘duking’ it out for prizes and she was quite... [Read More]

Christmas in July: A...
Today, Christmas in July is an occasion to enjoy a taste of the Christmas season in the summertime—or in the wintertime, if you live in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s also an occasion for Yule-themed shopping sprees and a flurry of out-of-season Christmas movies on the cable-TV networks. But did you ever wonder about the origins of Christmas in July? There are various theories about that, but it may well be that Christmas in July as we know it is the legacy of a special show business tradition... [Read More]
