Please tell me I'm not the only one who's anti-Thanksgiving Day shopping...

Black Friday? Knock yourself out! Shopping Thanksgiving Day/Night? NO THANK YOU!!

It personally bothers me that retailers have gone so nuts at getting the shopper to their store, that they resort to being open on Thanksgiving, which alters the employees plans (or ruins them all together).

I just hate the idea of looking into some employer in the eye and knowing that they aren't with their family because of me. :family:

Ontario, Canada eh!
I do not like it either. This is a time for family and friends, to relax and just be thankful.
You know their reasoning will be, that not everyone celebrates thanksgiving therefore the stores should open for them. As long as people show up at the store to shop they will open when ever they can.
We have so few days anymore set aside for a collective break seems a shame to cut out the few left.

I agree that Thanksgiving should be devoted to spending time with friends and family. But in the interest of full disclosure - last year at 10 pm on Thanksgiving night I was out and about enjoying the official kickoff to the Christmas shopping season.

that is after 10pm, most celebrations are over or winding down by then. They are talking about having the stores open all day.

I agree. We don't go out until 4:30 am on Black Friday. It appears Macy's and JC Penny's is opening at 8:00 PM this year. I am still eating pie and beating my kids in our annual all day game of monopoly. :munch:

I'm against it, too. The day set aside to give thanks for what we have becomes a mere countdown to an orgy of commercialism. The "thanks" part of Thanksgiving may be whittled down to a few hours before long. That thought chills me.

I, too, am against it but, I would like to provide another viewpoint. There are some employees that can use the money that time and a half (+) provides when they work the holiday. I did a 12 hour shift one year and had a very nice check - most excellent for a full-time college student who generally worked part-time hours. I, in no way, looked down on anyone that shopped that Thursday as I figured that they needed the bargains the store was providing. It was a long day and I was getting cranky toward the end but not because I missed the holiday with my family - it was because my feet hurt from being stuck behind a register for so long. If I worked in a retail store and was going to college and was offered the opportunity to work you better believe I would take those hours!

I don't like it. We shouldn't infringe on someone's holiday or family time, just to make a sale and for some people to save a few dollars. - Also, why are we still calling it Black Friday, if it no longer seems to exist? Doesn't make sense to me. - I used to love Black Friday shopping, but it's starting to lose it's appeal, and I'm not particularly sure if I will be partaking in it this year. - Leave Thanksgiving alone!

I love this... though, now I think it needs to be changed to "Black Thursday"...

I'm completely against retailers being open on Thanksgiving...COMPLETELY against it. I won't be shopping on Thanksgiving and I don't care if they're giving out XBOX ONEs for a buck. I'm not doing it.

But even having the stores open after midnight Thanksgiving (the very beginning of Black Friday) is kinda crappy because those people who have to work the overnight shifts just end up having to go to sleep on Thanksgiving so they can be awake for the overnight.

I just have a really hard time believing they make THAT much money being open that one extra day or a few hours that day.

Keep Thanksgiving Day a day of giving thanks.

I totally agree.

The only reason that stores are ignoring the "family" unit is because the almighty dollar is their god. And if people would stay home and shop, the stores would lose money for being opened but some people will never stay out of the stores on holidays. I look for Christmas Day to be next.

It's not the executives and CEO's that are working Thanksgiving, it will be the middle class, so the middle class should help each other out and stay home, do not shop on Thanksgiving Day. We need to unite against this.

Personally, I think it's sad that it takes place. In the end, I get that it's all about the bottom line, but those working aren't the ones benefitting from the bottom line.

It is what it is, I'm just so happy that I don't work in retail. Hate it for those that do!

:busy:I don't like the idea of stores being opened on Thanksgiving Day either. I worked in retail, KMart for 20 years. Our store has since closed, but the last few years we were opened, EVERYONE was expected to work at least part of the day. I always worked the morning shift, so at least I was able to have dinner with my family. I always feel bad for those who can't. Now, I wouldn't even think of going to a store on that day. I have braved the stores on Black Friday, and haven't decided if I'm going shopping that day or not.
