As this image of Santa Claus from 1898 clearly shows it appears Santa Claus has not changed much over the years.

The secularization of Santa is clearly an American invention and it began, as far as I can tell, way back in the 1840s or so.

Nevertheless the past 100 years has seen a steady evolution of Santa as influenced by movies, song and tradition.

The interesting thing to me about it is that Santa was largely a European tradition and like so many other traditions he came to the USA with those who fled Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries. Now the American Santa seems to be influencing the ancient traditions of Santa in Europe and he's becoming more uniform worldwide.

Where is Santa in the future? How will the world view him 100 years from now?

This is something I really hope that doesn't change, but change is always inevitable. I know a few years ago there was some controversy about Santa being portrayed as fat, and they were suggesting that Santa should be in shape to be a good role model for children. I was a little disturbed reading that people were saying that, but to each their own.
So being a traditionalist with Santa, I hope he doesn't change.

I'm with you. But changes in Santa are what I fear most. It was nice to see the backlash this year at the Hipster nativity -- at least we know there are still some things held sacred when it comes to Christmas. But I see Santa slipping further and further into the sludge of secularism and commercialism as they train to continually reshape him doesn't seem to be slowing down.

In the news this week was a project by Disney to cast a female in what the media says is a feminist version of Father Christmas. I have nothing against the actress they are talking for the part, I just blanche at the very idea of it. I believe the traditional Santa should be taught and celebrated. He's a powerful example. And yes, he's fun and he should remain fun. But I just don't like where the world is taking him.

I do not trust Hollywood and the media when it comes to Christmas traditions and Santa is clearly a target.

Santa is turned into whomever is trying to sell a product really. Change happens and one day I suspect Santa will probably be in a space suit flying a rocket. As long as there are "traditionalist" he will always appear jolly.

They may try to change the image of Santa but that image will not be portrayed in our home and I am sure as our children get older they will be keep with the image of Santa that they grew up with too. I don't know of anyone .. family or friend who has tried to change the image of Santa .. they all have the traditional image of Santa in their homes as well. I know of a few malls that have tried to change the image of Santa and the d├ęcor of that Santa and it bombed. Backlash from parents caused some to change back to the traditional Santa and setup and the ones who didn't change back saw a decline in children visiting Santa so that may cause them to rethink their new approach for next year.

I believe Santa Claus just would not be the traditional Santa if he was changed completely.
