I hope this is the right forum to discuss this........

For those of you who are Christian, what do you do to help focus on the true meaning of Christmas?

I LOVE everything about the Christmas season. I love the decorations, the activities, the Christmas shopping, the music, the movies, playing Santa, etc. But, I also love the Christ-like feelings that come with the season- service, reverence, gratitude, etc. I definitely get caught up in the commercialism, but also try to find a balance, making sure my family focuses on the birth of the Savior as well.

What do you do to keep Christ in Christmas? We always display numerous nativities. We read scriptures about Christ's birth. We have family devotionals that focus on the true meaning of Christmas. But, I feel like it isn't quite enough. I'd love to hear what others do.

    Thanks!

Well I do like to focus on everything. I have a nativity scene that I put up every year and try to make it the focus point of the season! :)

I love any stories about the birth of Christ during Christmas and have several nativities I display. I love Christian Christmas songs involving the birth of Christ. I love anything to do with Christmas and try to remain focused on what the season is really about! Jesus!

    A 3 year olds 1st Christmas lesson

my younger brother has two kids who r very young so they're just starting to realize that their is a Christmas. I want to instill in them early about the true meaning of Christmas. This year I plan on spending alot of time w/my neice and teaching her about the bible and Jesus Christ but i need to put it in a way that her 3 year old mind will understand. I can't really work w/my nephew he's only 1 the only thing he's concerned about is his bottle. Any suggestion on what I should do w/her?

If you want dvd's, Veggietales is awesome! They even have a Christmas one that is good and very funny! I enjoy it. You can discuss the dvd after watching it to see what she learned. As far as books are concerned, they have lots of them but I don't know what to recommend. You might search online or go to a Christian bookstore.

There is also a vegietales nativity. I bought it for my son from a Christian bookstore last year. It's cute but I was a little disappointed in the quality.

One of my favorite nativities is the Fisher Price Little People nativity. I bought that for my son for his first Christmas. I wanted one that he could play with...and it does give us opportunities to talk about who the characters are. He was 1 year last Christmas and knew the names, "Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus".

I don't think I mentioned this in my initial post, but I'm considering doing something along the lines of a Jesse Tree. That would give us daily scripture readings about Christ and the prophecies about His birth.

It's tough to keep it Christ centered, that's for sure. I, too, struggle with the commercialization because I am a sucker for all things Christmas for the most part. I put the nativity right smack in the middle of the mantle and also one under the tree. I also have a small one from a school project in the kitchen. When I am tempted to change up the mantle with a more secular decoration, or make room under the tree by moving the nativity, I get a hold of myself and say, "wait a minute", and remind myself that what I model as the mother in this family will definitely influence how my kids preserve the sacredness of Christmas day for generations to come.

We always put out a nativity and I always read the christmas story from the bible on christmas eve. I have never seen the little people nativity before. I will try to find it this year for my nieces and nephew.

Also, A Charlie Brown Christmas, is one of my favorite animated Christmas shows. It is nice that it has a Christian message. Charlie Brown finally gets into the spirit of Christmas when Linus tells him what Christmas is all about by reading a scripture from the Bible. cheesy

We have the nativity scene underneath the tree. And Kandice has a Nativity Scene from Fisher Price Little People........I always read her the Christmas Story from the Children´s Bible....and she knows already that Jesus is God´s son and that we celebrate his birth on Christmas Day. Many of the German Christmas Carols are directly about Jesus Birth...Silent Night, Oh Du Fröhliche, Hosianna, Ihr Kinderlein Kommet...they all tell about the story of Christ´s birth and the circumstances...that´s what we do...and I don´t do it forcefully...stupid word...lol...it´s just happening in our house and most of the Christian homes...it kinda goes hand in hand.........it´s a great balance between the presents, decorations and reason of the season.

It certainly is hard to do, but we have things that we do that help remind us. For example, we get together four or five time starting a Thanksgiving and ending at Christmas. During that time, we make sure we pray before we eat and give thanks for birth of Christ and his sacrifce for us. Another thing we do is attend the singing Christmas tree.....although some say it's more Christmas than Christ, being in a church has to give it point towards Christ. My family has nativity scences everywhere! As a young kid, my mother would lecture my brother and I about the reason....it stuck with me....

As others have said, we put a Nativity scene in the yard, and three in the house. We also get involved in the church Christmas production and lighting of the CHRISTmas tree. We also go for communion on Christmas Eve.

I teach 3 & 4 year old Sunday School class for the month of December and we make a 24 page coloring book that starts with Gabriel comeing to Mary and ends with Joseph taking Mary & Jesus to live in Egypt. You could easily do this for each day in December to help kids understand the true meaning of Christmas. My DD is in that class now, but I plan to make a copy for her each year later on so we can color one page every night. I've never done the advent wreath and candles, but I think that would be nice. Also, you can do a birthday cake for Jesus---I think we'll do birthday muffins this year. We do Jesus' birthday party in Sunday School class. We have a nativity scene at home and last year I would hold her up and ask her who everybody was. I ask her multiple times during the season who's birthday Christmas is. I bought a Little Golden Book that tells the Christmas Story. My FIL reads from Luke before we open gifts at their house on Christmas morning.

As a child, we were never really told that it was "Jesus' birthday". It just seemed that it was a natural thing to know because of all the great Christmas plays we had in church growing up. I don't think things were as commercialized in the late '70's, early '80's either. We had Santa, but we knew Christmas was about Jesus' birth too.

Going to midnight mass on Christmas Eve, or morning mass on Christmas Day, has always been central for me. The religious Christmas hymns are the most moving, I feel privileged to sing them: "O Little Town of Bethlehem", "Silent Night", "O Come, All Ye Faithful", "Joy to the World", "Coventry Carol", "What Child Is This".

In general, at that time of year people are at their best character, showing the value of faith, family, and community. That's the miracle.
