We asked for a modern re-do of A Christmas Carol in the latest episode of the Merry Podcast and at least one of four competing movie studios wants to deliver. Universal Pictures has purchased the rights to a modern re-telling of the Dickens classic and has tabbed Ice Cube as Scrooge in what they promise will be a Christmas comedy.

Ice Cube teams again with Tim Story, who brought Barbershop to the big screen, to head this project.

Three other studios — MGM, New Line and Disney, of all people — were bidding on the script.

Tentatively titled Humbug the movie is slated for a 2017 debut — no doubt at Christmas time.

We’re pretty confident Ice Cube is not the Scrooge we’re looking for and that Humbug is not the version of A Christmas Carol that we had in mind.
