John Hughes Day

chechik01Today is Wednesday, August 6th, 2014 and there are only 141 days until Christmas.

Today is John Hughes Day, a modern and towering figure in the culture of Christmas.

Born on this day in 1950 John Hughes became one of the most prolific screenwriters and film makers of the 1980s and 1990s. In the world of Christmas Hughes is credited with writing mega-Christmas hit Home Alone, the story of a boy accidentally left home alone at Christmas time.

Home Alone was quite the sensation. It broke box office records with nearly half a billion in revenue from theater ticket sales alone and it spawned several other films in sequel that did very well. Home Alone was not Hughes’ first Christmas work.

Hughes created the Griwold family of Vacation fame, whose characters went on to play in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, now considered every bit the class that It’s a Wonderful Life is.

Though not a Christmas movie another John Hughes classic gets regular play during Thanksgiving and is considered by many to be a natural handoff to the Christmas movie-watching season. That movie is titled Planes, Trains and Automobiles.
