Christmas Countdown

Jose Feliciano Day

Howdy! It’s Wednesday, September 10th, 2014 and there are only 106 days left until Christmas.

Today is Jose Feliciano Day. On this day in 1945 in the mountain home of the Garcia family in Lares, Puerto Rico Jose was born. Due to congenital glaucoma, Jose has been blind since birth. He received musical training as a child and has gone on to a sterling international career as a guitar virtuoso and vocalist.

For fans of Christmas music Jose is famous for his song Feliz Navidad which gets unfairly labeled by some as an annoying song. Released as part of a 1970 Christmas album the song is one of the few truly international Christmas songs ever released. “Feliz Navidad” is recognized by ASCAP as one of the 25 all-time most-played Christmas songs in the world.

The music of Jose Feliciano is an experience. It truly needs to be explored outside of this one monster song of Christmas. Here he is in a more recent recording with the incomparable Darryl Hall in a unique arrangement of the song:

Father of 7, Grandfather of 7, husband of 1. Freelance writer, Major League baseball geek, aspiring Family Historian.
