Peter Hollens’ Soaring Version of Mary Did You Know

YouTube star Peter Hollens, who is famous for singing with himself in amazing harmonies, does his oft-requested version of Mary Did You Know? in this new video out today.

Mary Did You Know? is an amazing piece of Christmas music. It is totally contemporary, the lyrics to it being written in 1984 by Mark Lowry, the first to make the song a hit. In an interview Lowry explained how he happened upon the lyrics:

Well, my Pastor asked me to write the Christmas program for our church, called The Living Christmas Tree, & I wrote some monologue to go in between the songs. I started thinking & wondering if Mary realized the power, authority & majesty that she cradled in her arms that first Christmas. I wondered if she realized those little hands were the same hands that scooped out oceans & formed rivers. I just tried to put into words the unfathomable. I started thinking of the questions I would have for her if I were to sit down & have coffee with Mary…you know, “What was it like raising God?” “…What did you know?” “…What didn’t you know?”

The song was set to music in 1991 and has since been recorded by dozens of popular artists.

This song is a lot like O Holy Night. It is challenging music set to an emotional theme. Not everyone can pull it off. In this rendition, Hollens does and it is majestic:
