Silent Night with Radiant Beams from BYU Vocal Point

Great music is nothing less than great storytelling. If that is true, the stories of Christmas are rich with harmony and unforgettable melody. They pierce the heart and make lasting impressions on the mind.

Of all the great songs of Christmas few are as worshipful and heartfelt as Silent Night. Originally written for guitar, Silent Night is instantly recognizable and quite nearly universally known.

There are two performances of Silent Night going viral this holiday season.

One is a solo performance by a known star of entertainment with all the trappings of Christmas showcased on a glitzy stage, the artist cooing the song with epic runs and all the inflection of modern vocal performance. She is being heralded while the song remains in the background.

The other performance of Silent Night is this rendition shown below — by a group of unknowns showing a simple scene made spectacular with soaring harmonies and ending on their knees at the manger of the Christ child. The song isn’t about them.

We’ll leave it to you to judge for yourself. But for us, this performance embodies the truer spirit of Christmas:

Father of 7, Grandfather of 7, husband of 1. Freelance writer, Major League baseball geek, aspiring Family Historian.
