It is Universal Tim Allen Day of Christmas, celebrating the birthday and Santa Clause legend of Tim Allen. Allen’s rise to prominence is a classic story of American-boy-made-good or American-boy-got-lucky, depending on how you look at it. Allen was born on this date in 1953.
The third of five brothers, Allen got his start by trying standup comedy on a dare from friends in Royal Oak, Michigan. That led to local television commercials, which led to the comedy circuit, which led to the comedy scene in Los Angeles which led to a runaway television comedy called Home Improvement with Allen in the lead as Tim-the-Toolman Taylor.
Allen had a dark side that nearly sidetracked his career in the late 1970s when he went to prison for possession of more than a pound of cocaine. The event changed his life and within 15 years he was briefly on top of the entertainment world as a best selling author with a hit television show and a smash hit movie called The Santa Clause.
In the film Tim Allen plays Scott Calvin, a divorced single father juggling a hectic work life as a toy company executive who gets hoodwinked into becoming Santa Claus. The movie was a runaway success and launched a couple of mediocre sequels and cemented Tim Allen as a genuine star of Christmas. Allen later went on to star in another Christmas movie, Christmas with the Kranks.
