I&#8217;ve never been able to find the music by Sir Henry Bishop, but I use the refrain for my own re-telling as it&#8217;s said to be based on a traditional legend. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>The mistletoe hung in the castle hall,<br \/>\nThe holly branch shone on the old oak wall;<br \/>\nAnd the baron&#8217;s retainers were blithe and gay,<br \/>\nAnd keeping their <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> holiday.<br \/>\nThe baron beheld with a father&#8217;s pride<br \/>\nHis beautiful child, young Lovell&#8217;s bride;<br \/>\nWhile she with her bright eyes seemed to be<br \/>\nThe star of the goodly company.<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m weary of dancing now,&#8221; she cried;<br \/>\n&#8220;Here, tarry a moment \u2014 I&#8217;ll hide, I&#8217;ll hide!<br \/>\nAnd, Lovell, be sure thou&#8217;rt first to trace<br \/>\nThe clew to my secret lurking-place.&#8221;<br \/>\nAway she ran \u2014 and her friends began<br \/>\nEach tower to search, and each nook to scan;<br \/>\nAnd young Lovell cried, &#8220;O, where dost thou hide?<br \/>\nI&#8217;m lonesome without thee, my own dear bride.&#8221;<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<\/p>\n<p>They sought her that night, and they sought her next day,<br \/>\nAnd they sought her in vain while a week passed away;<br \/>\nIn the highest, the lowest, the loneliest spot,<br \/>\nYoung Lovell sought wildly \u2014 but found her not.<br \/>\nAnd years flew by, and their grief at last<br \/>\nWas told as a sorrowful tale long past;<br \/>\nAnd when Lovell appeared the children cried,<br \/>\n&#8220;See! the old man weeps for his fairy bride.&#8221;<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough. <\/p>\n<p>At length an oak chest, that had long lain hid,<br \/>\nWas found in the castle \u2014 they raised the lid,<br \/>\nAnd a skeleton form lay mouldering there<br \/>\nIn the bridal wreath of that lady fair!<br \/>\nO, sad was her fate! \u2014 in sportive jest<br \/>\nShe hid from her lord in the old oak chest.<br \/>\nIt closed with a spring! \u2014 and, dreadful doom,<br \/>\nThe bride lay clasped in her living tomb!<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<br \/>\nOh, the mistletoe bough.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contributed by LoiS-sez This is actually a ballad with lyrics by Thomas Haynes Bayly.
