You are soon to be hit with a terrible choice. Will you side with those retailers who open on Thanksgiving<\/a> Day or those who refuse to? <\/p>\n

More than anything else it may be your politics that make the choice for you. <\/p>\n

Seriously. <\/p>\n

If you\u2019re conservative, you\u2019re pro-Thanksgiving shopping. Evidently, you so love<\/a> capitalism, the freedom to shop and Black Friday that you\u2019ll head out even on the blessed day of Thanksgiving<\/a> to support it all at places like Macy\u2019s, Walmart and Kmart. You get your Black Friday news from BFads.net<\/strong><\/a>, you hang on every word in the so-called War on Christmas<\/strong><\/a>, and doggone it, people had better say \u201cMerry Christmas<\/a>!\u201d<\/em> to you. <\/p>\n

If you\u2019re liberal, Thanksgiving<\/a> Day shopping is something you shun. You are so put out by retailers opening their doors on Thanksgiving<\/a> that you\u2019re actually thinking of picketing those places while the turkey cools. If you do shop, it\u2019ll be on the day after Thanksgiving<\/a> at places like Costco, Bed, Bath and Beyond, and Nordstrom\u2019s (where they celebrate one holiday at a time, you Christmas<\/a> idiots<\/em>). \u201cChristmas Creep\u201d is a real problem for you and it bugs you to see Christmas<\/a> in stores even five seconds before Thanksgiving<\/a>, much less five weeks. You get your Black Friday news from ThinkProgress.org<\/strong><\/a> and, doggone it, don\u2019t tell me \u201cMerry Christmas<\/a>!\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n

Yes, this is all part of the War on Thanksgiving<\/strong><\/a>, another drummed-up political ploy to further divide Americans. <\/p>\n

None of this, of course, has anything to do with politics. It is more common sense and personal choice. We can keep the politics out of it. <\/p>\n

So let me make this simple. I\u2019m going to put two lists below \u2014 one for stores that are opened on Thanksgiving<\/a> at some time and another for those who will not be open at all on Thanksgiving<\/a>. <\/p>\n

That\u2019s all these lists are good for. They don\u2019t represent a political position. They are not part of a \u201cwar\u201d at all. They just represent a choice for you \u2014 to shop or not. That\u2019s all. <\/p>\n

Stores Open Thanksgiving<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

  • Macy\u2019s<\/li>\n
  • Walmart<\/li>\n
  • Best Buy<\/li>\n
  • Target<\/li>\n
  • JCPenney<\/li>\n
  • Kmart<\/li>\n
  • Toys R Us<\/li>\n
  • Kohl\u2019s<\/li>\n
  • Belk<\/li>\n

    Stores Closed on Thanksgiving<\/a><\/strong>\t<\/p>\n

  • Costco<\/li>\n
  • GameStop<\/li>\n
  • American Girl<\/li>\n
  • Nordstrom\u2019s<\/li>\n
  • Dillards<\/li>\n
  • Burlington Coat Factory<\/li>\n
  • Crate and Barrel<\/li>\n
  • Marshalls<\/li>\n
  • Gordmans<\/li>\n
  • JoAnne Fabric and Craft Stores<\/li>\n
  • Pier 1 Imports<\/li>\n
  • TJ Maxx<\/li>\n
  • REI<\/li>\n
  • Homegoods<\/li>\n

    Now, let\u2019s separate these two lists on practical lines instead of by political agendas. Black Friday has always belonged to the big box discounters. Other types of stores \u2014 the very same stores on the \u201cclosed on Thanksgiving\u201d list above \u2014 hate Black Friday and all it has ever stood for. Black Friday is just not their day. It never has been When was the last time you saw lines on Black Friday at Nordstom\u2019s or Costco?<\/p>\n

    You haven\u2019t. There\u2019s a reason for that. <\/p>\n

    So don\u2019t think for one second that the \u201cclosed\u201d stores above have anything to do with ideals or concerns for their employees and their families. It is all about \u2014 as it is always about in a for-profit venture \u2014 the money. In this case, it is more profitable for places like Costco to claim the high road than to give in and open on Thanksgiving<\/a>. <\/p>\n

    It is a hard truth that is absent of all politics whatsoever. And like all truth, it feels good. <\/p>\n

    So as Jiminy Cricket advised, let your conscience be your guide. If you have no problems lining up on Thanksgiving<\/a> to save a buck, go ahead. That\u2019s your choice. If it offends you to think that participating in the commercial<\/a> madness just a little earlier make that choice then. Either way, you decide. <\/p>\n
