{"id":23255,"date":"2015-11-26T02:00:30","date_gmt":"2015-11-26T09:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/?p=23255"},"modified":"2015-10-08T10:03:00","modified_gmt":"2015-10-08T16:03:00","slug":"the-first-christmas-tree-in-england","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/the-first-christmas-tree-in-england\/","title":{"rendered":"The First Christmas Tree in England"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was the British royal family\u2019s German connections which led to the introduction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> tree custom in England. <\/p>\n<p>King George III\u2019s wife, Queen Charlotte &#8212; who was of German descent&#8211; arranged for a great yew tree to be erected inside the Queen\u2019s Lodge at Windsor on December 25 1800. <\/p>\n<p>A party of children of the local great-and-good was to take place that <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Day, and she had the tree decorated with toys, sweetmeats, fruits and nuts wrapped in wax paper. The whole thing was then lit with small candles.<\/p>\n<p>She kept a <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> tree in the royal family every year thereafter. <\/p>\n<p>Prince Albert and Queen Victoria popularized the custom in England particularly after a lithograph in The Illustrated London News in the winter of 1848 showed the rest of the country the royal <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> tree with family gathered around it. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It was the British royal family\u2019s German connections which led to the introduction of the Christmas tree custom in England.
