Have that and your dips will be a hit. <\/p>\n<p>But what if you want an onion dip with a little zing&#8230;a little surprise shot of freshness, a dip that makes folks grab another chip and ask, <em>&#8220;what&#8217;s in this stuff?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The rumor about the Lipton dip is that it was devised in the 50s and proves so popular as part of holiday entertaining that more of Lipton&#8217;s product ends up on chips and not really in soup bowls. So if you&#8217;re lazy and just need a quick dip, by all means go traditional&#8230;and processed. If not, here&#8217;s the longer road to a fresher onion dip:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients &#8212;<\/strong><br \/>\n3 tablespoons olive oil<br \/>\n1 pound onions, diced<br \/>\n1 teaspoon kosher salt, divided<br \/>\n1 1\/2 cups sour cream<br \/>\n3\/4 cup mayonnaise<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon garlic powder<br \/>\n1\/4 teaspoon white pepper, freshly ground<\/p>\n<p><strong>Directions<\/strong><br \/>\n1. Put the oil, diced onions and 1\/2 teaspoon of salt into a saute pan over medium heat. Cook for 20 minutes then set aside to cool.<br \/>\n2. Combine the cooked ingredients with all other ingredients into a bowl and mix.<br \/>\n3. Refrigerate for at least an hour &#8212; overnight is best for flavors to settle. <\/p>\n<p>This isn&#8217;t that much more work than the old standard. But it is more than a notch above. Some have had success replacing the mayonnaise with Greek yogurt.
