Some Christmas<\/a> carols are so old it is hard to tell which is older — the lyrics or the tune. Below is a carol thought to be one of the oldest Christmas<\/a> tunes ever. Few today know it well and it is presented here as something new and fresh to Christmas<\/a> music fans. <\/p>\n

500 years ago tunes were performed publicly only occasionally and, of course, there was no radio<\/a> or television to play things over and over. Songs then were re-purposed for a variety of uses. The song What Child is This?<\/em> is perhaps the most well known Christmas<\/a> song that also reflects a different purpose for the tune in Greensleeves<\/em>. The tune for the song below is so old we don’t know who wrote it but we’re pretty sure the tune comes from folk music of the time that was used for other purposes. <\/p>\n

The Wexford Carol refers to a place in Ireland, where this song comes from. It is purely religious, in fact it is quite nearly a complete retelling of Luke, Chapter 2. However, the words are poetically set, beautifully presented and performed. Add to it some modern video storyline by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and you’ve got a Christmas<\/a> treat of profound impact:<\/p>\n
