Music and television stars of the 1950s still produced major <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> releases and the gifts, toys and fads of the time seemed<br \/>\ncaught sometimes between a time warp to the past and to the future.<\/p>\n<p>Take, for example, the wildly popular Star Wars action figures \u2013 the hottest toys of the late 1970s. Only they were not called \u201cvideo games\u201d. They didn\u2019t know what to call them then.<\/p>\n<p>At the very first, they were known as \u201ctelevision gaming apparatus\u201d. The $100 game system was Sears&#8217; best-selling item during the 1975 <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> season, with sales of more than $40 million.<\/p>\n<p>Sears was a major <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> retailer for any <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> shopper in the 1970s. But at the time there was not only money to be made but stars to be celebrated. Here is Joe DiMaggio pitching Mr. Coffee as \u201cthe delicious way to say Merry Christmas\u201d:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/xlYnU8Ixgc0\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nobody made <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> commercials better in the 1970s than Coca Cola:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_zCsFvVg0UY\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> on television was a magical season in the 1970s, a mixture of past and present. One of the biggest made-for-TV <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> specials was the movie titled \u201cThe Homecoming\u201d, which was more or less the pilot episode for The Waltons, one of the longest running and most popular television series of the 1970s:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/umEEnFtmV0I\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Nowhere did old and new clash when it came to <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> on television than with Archie Bunker and All in the Family:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vk8F1nEoiQg\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The 1970s built on the collection of made-for-television children\u2019s shows that many today consider classic and watch over and over again. In 1974 the classic \u201cThe Year Without a <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Santa<\/a> Claus\u201d brought scenes like this to television:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_SGlPnA_iCk\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Of course the greats like Crosby and Como and Hope were still on television at <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> in the 1970s. But many times they made their appearances as well on shows like this classic from Donny and Marie:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qhRxeYcsQak\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Television influenced the toys of <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> in a big way. Aside from the Star Wars toys mentioned above there were other action figures to be had in the form of Steve Austin and Jamie Summers, the Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-25724\" src=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/bionic-woman-toy.jpg\" alt=\"Bionic Woman\" width=\"980\" height=\"735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/bionic-woman-toy.jpg 980w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/bionic-woman-toy-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/bionic-woman-toy-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 980px) 100vw, 980px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Taking pictures in the 1970s was huge and <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> was the time to get new equipment. Eastman Kodak, a corporate giant in those days, used television stars to pitch their latest technology.
