The 1983 movie, written by Jean Shepherd, quietly features a number of classic automobiles of the late 1930s and early 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>These vehicles are celebrated by car enthusiasts every year, as a matter of <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> tradition.<\/p>\n<p>The funny thing is that cars really have little to do with the story \u2013 except for the fact that Ralphie\u2019s old man is an \u201cOldsmobile Man\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, Ralphie was based on Jean Shepherd himself.<\/p>\n<p>So what we see in <em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Story<\/em> is just an extension of Jean Shepherd, his old man, and the cars of his youth.<\/p>\n<p><strong>~ Jean Shepherd and Cars ~<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Story<\/em> was the work of Jean Shepherd, an American humorist, writer and <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/a-glimpse-of-christmas-100-years-ago\/\">radio<\/a> and television personality of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n<p>While most famous in <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> circles for his classic film <em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Story<\/em>, Shepherd spent decades in media entertaining and writing about topics of Americana.<\/p>\n<p>Most do not realize that Jean Shepherd was also a car freak.<\/p>\n<p>He owned MGs, Porsches, and Morgans, even a Goggomobil. He was an announcer at sports car rallies and a monthly columnist in <em>Car and Driver<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<p>So while <em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Story<\/em> was never about cars there are subtle references to classic vehicles that car enthusiasts celebrate every <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<table bgcolor=\"#3b5f41\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><center><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/directory.libsyn.com\/episode\/index\/show\/sbmchristmas\/id\/20290466\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32378\" src=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/SBMX-1.jpg\" alt=\"Sleigh Bells and Mistletoe Christmas Podcast\" width=\"1200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/SBMX-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/SBMX-1-300x50.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/SBMX-1-1030x172.jpg 1030w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/SBMX-1-768x128.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none;\" src=\"\/\/html5-player.libsyn.com\/embed\/episode\/id\/20290466\/height\/90\/theme\/custom\/thumbnail\/no\/direction\/backward\/render-playlist\/no\/custom-color\/6f6259\/\" width=\"100%\" height=\"90\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><\/center><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>~ Oh Fuuuuuuudge ~<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Shepherd narrates <em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Story<\/em> with many brilliant and comedic expressions such as when he says <em>\u201cSome men are Baptist, others Catholic; my father was an Oldsmobile man.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>That is backed up by the few scenes in the movie where the family heads out in their 1938 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan.<\/p>\n<p>The car used in the movie is frequently on display at <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.achristmasstoryhouse.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>A Christmas Story House &amp; Museum<\/strong><\/a><\/em> in Cleveland.<\/p>\n<p>The blue four-door sedan shows up during the \u201cOhhhh fuuuuuuudge\u201d fiasco when Ralphie\u2019s helping his dad change a flat tire on the car.<\/p>\n<p>You can also see the family\u2019s primary mode of transportation parked outside their house and at the Chinese restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The model originally cost an affordable $900 MSRP and offered enough fuel efficiency, power, and size to function as a family vehicle.<\/p>\n<p>Its six-cylinder engine and rear-wheel drive gave it enough muscle to transport a family and their <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> tree.<\/p>\n<p>140,000 models were produced, and the one used in the movie was donated by a local Cleveland car collector.<\/p>\n<p>The car, along with the home\u2019s furnace, was frequently a source for the Old Man\u2019s profanity.<\/p>\n<p>That profanity was also authentic in the sense that the 1938 Oldsmobile featured technology that was primitive compared to our day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat hot damn Olds has froze up again! That son of a bitch would freeze up in the middle of summer on the equator!\u201d Antifreeze then was methanol, and cooling systems were not sealed, so it would quickly evaporate. We use ethylene glycol today, which is much less volatile.<\/p>\n<p>These details \u2013 and many others \u2013 fill the Christmastime pages of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.curbsideclassic.com\/curbside-classics-american\/christmas-classic-1937-oldsmobile-six-a-christmas-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-schema-attribute=\"\">car collector and enthusiast websites<\/a><\/strong> every December.<\/p>\n<p><strong>~ More than Just Oldsmobile ~ <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Other classics appear in the movie in the background and those details are missed by most of us.<\/p>\n<p>But not by car enthusiasts.<\/p>\n<p>For example, when Ralphie takes on Scut Farkus he walks through a rusted out Ford Model A:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32373\" src=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Ford-Model-A-Cabriolet-Ralphie.jpg\" alt=\"Cars of A Christmas Story\" width=\"600\" height=\"337\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Ford-Model-A-Cabriolet-Ralphie.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Ford-Model-A-Cabriolet-Ralphie-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Flick sticks his tongue to the flagpole all the car nuts notice two things: the police car is a 1948 Chevy Stylemaster and the firetruck is a 1938 Ford.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-32374\" src=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1948-Chevrolet-Stylemaster-and-Ford-fire-truck-600.jpg\" alt=\"Cars in A Christmas Story\" width=\"599\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1948-Chevrolet-Stylemaster-and-Ford-fire-truck-600.jpg 599w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/1948-Chevrolet-Stylemaster-and-Ford-fire-truck-600-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 599px) 100vw, 599px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What most of these car websites and fans are pointing out is the same charm that captures the rest of us when we watch <em>A <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> Story<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>For me personally it is one <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> movie I can recall actually seeing for the first time in a movie theater.<\/p>\n<p>My Dad took our family to it as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a> vacation. It is THE one movie where I can recall Dad laughing hysterically at. That was not something he would ever do in public.<\/p>\n<p>But my Dad was a child of the 1940s.<\/p>\n<p>Everything \u2013 from the kitchen appliances to, yes, the cars \u2013 was a gleeful throwback for him. Dad was the kid who wanted the BB gun for <a href=\"https:\/\/mymerrychristmas.com\/x\/celebrating-20-years-of-the-merry-forums\/\">Christmas<\/a>.
