It stars Johnny Depp and the first trailer just dropped:<\/p>\n<div class='avia-iframe-wrap'><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Ebenezer | Official Trailer (Johnny Depp, 2026)\" width=\"1500\" height=\"844\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QY82jTX1vmo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>In a pre-promotional event at Comic Con in San Diego Depp appeared in full costume in front of fans, some saying <em>\u201cGood day to you, Mr. Scrooge\u201d<\/em> to which he responded, in character, <em>\u201cWhat\u2019s so good about it?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The movie, set to release November 13, 2026 stars Johnny Depp, Rupert Grint, Andrea Riseborough, Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Tramell Tillman, and Ian McKellen.<\/p>\n<p>The official website can be found at <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebenezermovie.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EbenezerMovie.com<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>There has already been plenty of scuttlebutt about the movie and it\u2019s production, especially its tagline <em>&#8220;Before he was Scrooge, he was Ebenezer&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Might be the most humiliatingly bad tagline I&#8217;ve ever heard,&#8221; while others added, &#8220;Okay, the tagline doesn&#8217;t really make sense, but it might be worth checking out.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Comments like this showcase one of the big dangers in producing a serious script for younger audiences who most likely have never read Dickens\u2019 book.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly, everyone is familiar with the story but most have leaned on only screen versions of it that have varied greatly.<\/p>\n<p>Scrooge has been covered by everyone from The Muppets to Bill Murray.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-36016\" src=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Johnny-Depp-Ebenezer.png\" alt=\"Depp at Comic Con\" width=\"681\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Johnny-Depp-Ebenezer.png 681w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Johnny-Depp-Ebenezer-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/mmc-220a5.kxcdn.com\/x\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Johnny-Depp-Ebenezer-450x253.png 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 681px) 100vw, 681px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Given the cult following of Johnny Depp, who can no doubt pull off the eccentricities of Ebenezer Scrooge, and the millions of dollars dedicated to promote this film, there is no doubt this movie is going to be seen by a lot of eyeballs.<\/p>\n<p>The secret to its success is ultimately in the script. Some have taken the tagline to mean that this movie is more of a prequel than <em>A Christmas Carol<\/em> main event \u2013 that Depp\u2019s version begins somewhere different than where Dickens places us in the story.<\/p>\n<p>If that theory proves true it reshuffles the order of things in telling the story. Dickens places flashbacks courtesy of the Ghost of Christmas past. We learn of Ebenezer\u2019s tortured childhood and distant, cold relationship with his father.<\/p>\n<p>None of telling that part of things would involve Depp because he\u2019s not a child. I can&#8217;t see them pushing Depp as Scrooge if a child is going to actually dominate the movie&#8217;s storyline. I\u2019m not sure I\u2019m holding to the theory that the scriptwriters are building a multi-part Christmas movie franchise here.<\/p>\n<p>It would, speaking in defense of what some call the <em>\u201chumiliatingly bad\u201d<\/em> tagline, be interesting to consider the name Ebenezer as both part of the story and the name of the movie.<\/p>\n<p>Ebenezer is a name culled from the Bible and had a rather prolific presence in Victorian era England. The Christian hymn, <em>Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing<\/em>\u00a0mentions the phrase \u201chere I raise my Ebenezer\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ebenezer in the Bible is not a name, it is a noun. It is a monument, usually built of stones, to make an emphatic statement about belief in God. In the hymn, the words imply to take a stand and to redeem one\u2019s belief in God.<\/p>\n<p>If the story of <em>A Christmas Carol<\/em> is about anything it\u2019s redemption.<\/p>\n<p>Depp is a surprising choice to play Scrooge, just as surprising as George C. Scott was in 1984\u2019s made-for-television classic that has grown such a cult following. Scott engineers the transformation \u2013 or, the building of the Ebenezer \u2013 masterfully, and many can see those possibilities in Depp.<\/p>\n<p>The fears, and we\u2019ve seen this in recent years with adaptations built for cable and streaming services, that the focus is more on the dark than the light. Foul language, violence and psychosis have been more the angle than the soul-changing redemption of Scrooge. That is why, for all their bluster, those productions and many similar others of the past are largely forgotten.<\/p>\n<p><em>A Christmas Carol<\/em> has been around long enough and it has seen so many versions that it is clear that audiences want to experience the dark-to-light redemption of Scrooge. It is, after all, the entire point Dickens was making.<\/p>\n<p>Will they string it out? Will they drag Depp\u2019s Ebenezer through the depths of hell before they shine the light of Christmas redemption at the end?<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps that is why the marketing department has released this trailer in this way.
