That sounds so cute! I am not a small animal person, but I can appreciate their cuteness--like when you babysit and can give the kids back to their parents! LOL!

Guinea pigs ARE cute, and the little whistling and warbling sounds they make! I had some when I was in high school. Started with one, bought a companion for her that the pet shop said was female ... they made a mistake one that one. When I discovered a baby piggie one morning, I removed the second 'pig to a separate cage, but I guess he was part rabbit, because the first 'pig later had a second litter---triplets that time. I kept the first baby, but the triplets went to the pet shop for adoption. Dad used to enjoy holding a guinea pig on his lap (on a towel) and feeding it apple. When he was in the mood, he'd say, "Bring me a pig!" The 'pigs learned that apples came from the refrigerator, so whenever they heard the refrigerator door open and close, they'd start whistling because they thought a treat was coming.

So sad for your customer. If you find out what happened, please let us know. How long had she had the Macaw? Do you know how long they normally live?
This Macaw was only around a year old. They can live up to 80 years so it's sad she lost this one so soon.

The rules changed when I was a junior in college!!! Today was fun for the kids. They were really glad to have me back. One of the subs I had did not do a good job. She took apart the packets I had copied so she could give the pages out individually. Grrr. I give out the packets so students will have everything for the week in their priority folders. So I had to spend a lot of the day putting the packets back together. Plus, she didn't even complete half the stuff that should have been done, so we are starting off behind by about a week.

Good luck in going back to school. If I could, I would be a perpetual student. I love school!!! The extra education will definitely help!

Why did she do that ???? Good grief !!! I also would be a perpetual student if I could !! xo

Your mom sounds so brave, MGRamsey. My mom planned her funeral arrangements, too. She insisted, though, that those of us she sent on "missions" for her (to get her funeral clothes) have a good, fun time. We did. My sisters and cousins talked about all the funny things Mother did over lunch that Mother insisted we have as her treat. I have thought of your mom a lot and wish there were something that could be done. Right now, I pray for strength for her and all the family and for no pain. I know that with the nature of cancer, there will be pain; but I pray that the drugs will alleviate it. Take care and keep yourself healthy.

Good Monday morning everyone.

Sorry I have been away so long. It has been a stressful few weeks. Both of my parents have spent time in the hospital. Mom spent 3 weeks in the hospital. Both are home now. Dad is doing ok. Mom is terminal. She has good days and bad days. The past few have been good. She insisted on taking care of both their funeral arrangements so we did that last Friday. She keeps fighting and looking ahead.

Thanks to everyone for all your prayers. Have a blessed day everyone.

Like I told MC, I am not a small animal person; but I love hearing about their antics. I think they are cute, but I don't really like to handle them. It is funny to hear how they recognize sounds and then keep whistling for you to give them snacks.

I have had a few piggies too, even with my allergies. The allergies have gotten a lot worse over the years so I can't have them anymore. I am not sure why they say Guinea Pigs are not smart. I think they are very smart. They do recognize certain sounds and they know when their owner comes home and as you said, they knew the sound of the refrigerator. I love the way they whistle for things. The ones at work have certain whistles for treats. They will keep it up until I give them one. It's not like they live at our pet shop that long so they learn that real quick!

The babies are super adorable! Full of fur, eyes opened and you are allowed to handle them immediately!!!

I love hearing about your dad spending time with your Guinea Pigs!

I understand how you feel. But the important part is where you talked about his being with his momma and daddy and others and seeing him again yourself one day. That is what keeps a lot of people going is knowing they will be reunited one day! Take care and may your happy memories comfort you.

reading mgramsey´s post right now hit home kind off....I have tears running down my face, cos it made me think of my dear Grandfather who passed away on January 12 last year...I am always thinking about him...and sometimes a tear or two roll down my cheeks...but this time it really hit me hard....I just always imagine him sitting in paradise with his momma and daddy and cousins and friends who were waiting for him....and I know he is waiting for me and the family now, too...but it will be soo long til we see him....and I miss him so bad...........Opa Ich liebe dich!!!!

It is always so good to hear from you. Don't overdo!!! I am sure you are excited about your new place. How does it feel to be back "home"? How close are you to your family?

Hi friends,
Just wanted to say a quick, Christmassy hello :)

Unpacking & running errands today. Also having my car looked at.

Seawaters, thinking of you today. Good luck! Xo

Mgramsey, thoughts & prayers going out to you. God bless you & your family.

Xmas, good luck on your final interview! Go with your gut, and follow your heart , you'll make the right decision.

I kept a Christmas corner in my bedroom, where I left out my Mr. Christmas clock w/ the ballroom dancers, and my Mr. Christmas Grammophone. I decided they must stay out year round ;)

Thinking of you all & sending hugs.

XO

Stacey

No wonder you will be our vet in our Christmas town!!! You know so much. I have learned a lot from you!!!

Sorry to hear about the macaw, we hand rear birds and keep all kinds, and i can tell you that i have seen the healthest bird fall of the perch, was it doing anything different not that i ever leaned it in my vet nurse training as lots of vets no very little about parrots, i had to talke a course to rear birds wondering did she notice any thing difference in its droppings there is ways of telling from that, as well maybe it eat something it should not have. its a hard one as a bird will hide its sickness , its comes from the wild thing in them (other animals wood pick on a sick bird in the wild) so its so hard to tell, like they do take heart attacks and they take a few bad diseases to which unless you know the signs they are hard to heal, as well it could have had a calicum def birds can not hold it long and given done can result in probelms again,

LOL--so funny. How do they book their flights to get to the Olympic site? Tehe!

For you guinea pig fans---have you seen the 2013 Guinea Pig Games calendar? It has photos of guinea pigs participating in Olympic-type games. This article online has some hilarious photos of 'pigs biking, hurdling, swimming, etc. Pretty cute!

I was never bitten by any of my guinea pigs, but they liked to lick my fingers now and then.

I agree with you, CAH, and I am glad you did let us know. For one thing, we are family and should share the good times and the bad. It is not really a downer, especially if we can help. Isn't it great that we have people on here like Shellie and others who can give us info and advice that we can share with others in need? That's one of the reasons that I love this place.

At first I didn't want to bring this "downer story" to the Countdown but glad I did. It helps to hear from others so I can help the customers. I will pass this along to her when I see her again. At first we thought it could have been some type of fumes but she has another Macaw at home that is still healthy and happy! If it was fumes they would both be gone. I did tell her he could have been ill and about how they hide their illness to protect themselves in the wild. I also said it might have been born with some type of defect that she wasn't aware of. I didn't think about the droppings but maybe my boss asked her about it when I got busy with other stuff. Thanks for the info!

Being happy where you work is so important. It is evident that your are happy, and they are lucky that you have shared the last 10 years with them.

Tomorrow, besides being Elvis Presley's birthday, will be my 10 year anniversary at my job. It has been the best 10 years of my life there! I just love the people I work for and the regular customers we get. Of course I love the animals too!

Take care, Jennifer. It is no fun with hurt ribs.

Don't do it. I just hurt my rib again by trying to clean. I thought since the bump on my rib went down in size and because it wasn't sore anymore that I could lift things and clean like I always do. Now I am paying the price!!
