There's George Bailey's mom, too ... we forget what a warm, loving presence she has been in George's life until he is "unborn" and we see her as a hard, embittered widow.

And when Father's Day comes along ... I nominate George's father. Jimmy Stewart (or was it Frank Capra?) said of Samuel S. Hinds in the role: "He's so perfect he looks like TWO fathers."

We talked about this one (had a long conversation with my eldest about this piece). George's mother most certainly came up. As did the Loretta Young character in The Bishop's Wife and, believe it or not, the Mary Steenburgen character in Elf.
