At 138 days in the Countdown to Christmas we take a listen today to crooner Sam Smith — we still call them that, right? Crooners? — well, he’s crooning here and doing it well in a popular video from last December:

It is funny how a classic Christmas song remains a classic. Smith in his rendition is traditionally soulful but he seems to understand that this song isn’t your typical happy Christmas tune. In fact, it is interesting to read in the comments from obviously younger fans who don’t know or understand the origin of this song.

The song, of course, comes from a movie — Meet Me in St. Louis — part of which tells the story of loved ones who cannot be together for Christmas. It’s supposed to be a little sad and yet still hopeful.

Some times we think when modern artists release their versions of Christmas classics we think some mandatory viewing of a little Christmas history should be required.
