Best New Christmas Music 2020: Angels We Have Heard on High Lindsey Stirling
Angels We Have Heard on High is the very fresh new video put out by Lindsey Stirling:
I’m not going to lie, I’ve been a bit disappointed in Stirling the past few years. But in this video she hits the right chords in terms of messaging.
Angels We Have Heard on High is based upon the Gospel Story of Luke, a sacred text that portrays the wonder of the shepherds in the Nativity Story. The song is one of questions: Shepherds, Why this Jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong?
Those words have caused some historians to surmise that the Shepherds did not know what they were seeing and that their core reaction was one of ignorance or confusion. But if you keep those words within the context of the entire hymn it proves just the opposite: the shepherds knew exactly what they were seeing and from it they praised God and conveyed that message to all the world:
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee
Christ the Lord, the newborn King
It is a joyous celebration, a pure message of Christmas. The song is fast moving and one that should evoke “glad tidings of great joy”.
The best of Lindsey Stirling always comes with simplicity. There is not much to this video and that is its strength. The music is well arranged and appropriately festive. The heavy make-up and overly dramatic reactionary shots distract a little from the music, which is what ultimately carries the message.
