Can I tell my friends I am an elf?

Dear Ernest (on behalf of Elf Agent X, Santa’s head of Secret Spies),

Can I tell my friends I am an elf?

No. Not a good idea.

Well, okay — maybe. But you have to be smart about it. You don’t want to walk around wearing pointy shoes. You have to be very careful.

Remember when I told you that an elf looks just like any other person? There is a reason for that. When you apply to become an elf one of the first things you are asked is if you can keep secrets. This is a very important part of living the Elf Code.

If everyone knows you are an elf how do you think they will act around you?

If everyone knows you are an elf you may never be treated “normal” again. All your friends would be constantly asking you for favors from Santa, or to meet the reindeer or to get a ride on the sleigh. All those things would detract you from doing what you need to do to be an elf.

But there are ways you can be friends with another elf and both know about it. Have you ever seen a picture of Santa winking? A picture like this:

santawink

When you wink that means you can only see out of one eye. Winking is a very old symbol and a very ancient practice. It means you have an eye single to the goodness of Christmas, to always being kind and of service to others. It is symbolic of the “all seeing eye” that is full of wisdom, truth and love.

When an elf thinks he or she meets another elf they should wink very quickly. Another elf knows the sign of the wink and what it means and will answer back with a wink of their own. If you wink at someone and they wink back, you can both know that you are part of the brotherhood of those in the service of Santa.

If you talk make sure you are not within the hearing of others because it is important that your work as an elf always remains anonymous.
