Sides, in order from my most to least favorite, based on what we usually have at my wife’s grandmother’s house for Thanksgiving:

1. Mac and cheese (you saw it coming)
2. Dressing/stuffing and brown butter gravy (but only the kind my wife makes — other dressings are too unpredictable)
3. Mashed potatoes
4. Sweet potatoes
5. Warm rolls/biscuits with butter
6. Corn
7. Peas
8. Green beans/green bean casserole
9. Cranberry sauce

So basically lots of carbs. And also, that’s right — I’m not a big cranberry sauce guy. I agree that it’s iconic, and that it’s gotta be on the table, but I’ve never cared for it and will not reach for it unless there’s no other sides.
If you have ever tried spiked Egg-Nog, try doing the same with Cranberry Sauce. A little Bourbon or Rum may move that up your list.

My BIL makes the best collard greens!

I am always up for trying new dishes for the holidays and I have always wanted to try these. There are I feel some uniquely Southern dishes served at Thanksgiving such as Mac and Cheese, Collard Greens, Sweet Potato Pie and so on but they are not as prevalent in the west. For one of our T-Day dinners, my niece attempted to make this dish and maybe it was authentic however, it tasted like pure vintager and if you leaned over the pot it would take your breath away. Is this normal or did she just wing it? Would BIL be willing to share his recipe because I would like to try it again.
