It would be an appropriate gesture under the circumstances, wouldn't it? :)

When a film is made, on-set jokes are sometimes indulged in at the end of a take---assuming that when the editor cuts the film, he or she will excise the tomfoolery. Huntz Hall in the Bowery Boys movies was famous for gagging it up at the end of a take, and those gags (often at the expense of co-star Leo Gorcey, who was not well liked) sometimes stayed in the film; Lou Costello was another on-camera cutup. Maybe this is a bit of fooling around that the editor missed (or decided to leave in)? We may never know, but it's fun to speculate.

I've seen that film A LOT, but that's never even occurred to me! I'd always thought he was just wagging his index finger, which on looking at it again, I'm pretty sure he is!!! ;)
