Wokeup to freezing temps this morning in northern California. Hubby and I watched the Rose Parade and saw the reunion of a soldier and his wife and son. So touching. We also saw a couple get married on one of of the floats.

Snowflake, I saw that Wisconsin is playing Stanford in the Rose Bowl. I though of you when the WI band marched down Colorado Blvd.

Hubby and I were privileged to attend one year and it was fantastic. I want to go again one day, maybe next year!

Happy New Year again, everyone!

It was a very touching parade this year!

I'm Pennsylvania dutch and still can't stand sauerkraut!!! I've tried it prepared all kinds of ways but I just can't do it. I have a pork loin in the crock pot though.

Have you rinsed it plenty of times? I swear, that's the trick. Continuous rinsing gets all of the bitterness out which originally gives it the taste that I can't stand. Maybe you're just not a cabbage person!

I remember in high school we used to have "Heritage Day" and all of the teachers of the foreign languages classes would prepare food dishes from the country of the class they taught. I remember the German teacher always made tons of sauerkraut and the smell just filled the entire hallways of the school - it was so gross! She never rinsed it off once or seasoned it or anything. It was just taken out of the bag and plopped down to be served. She always used to say, "I just don't understand why no one eats my food." People couldn't even bear to walk into her classroom with the smell!

Happy New Year (and 8th day of Christmas)! Anybody making a special meal today? My husband made gumbo last night--yummy! Today we'll be having black eyed peas with cabbage on the side--black eyed peas for luck and cabbage for wealth. My husband's eating head cheese for luck today too--I told him he could eat my share as well (yuck, shudder.)

I think I did. I had Wifi when I went camping so I know I didn't miss any then.

I was going to say you, Made.

I smell New Years dinner and it is making me so hungry! That is the hard thing about holidays - I always skip lunch so I can eat a huge dinner and then I am starving.

Hope you are all having a nice day!

People don't understand that. We had a home here get hit last night by a stray bullett. It came down through the roof and hit the footboard of a bed with a 2 year old in it.

That is scary.

Wow it sounds like everyone is having great meals today! Growing up we use to eate black eyed peas and pork...but since leaving home we don't really cook anything special..I did make a Mexican lasagna last night and I just put it in the oven..should be done in an hour! I feel better reading everyone's posts here my blues have definitely gone away.. I was reading the weather forecast for January and everyone who is sick of snow should be happy because we are about to go into a January thaw for 2 weeks and the whole eastern us should be about 10 degrees above average..nothing new for us in the south.lol they say the last week in January and into Feb cold weather will return..I am counting on it because I still have ski tickets I want to use this winter! have a good day everyone! and enjoy your New Years Meals!

Head cheese=yuck I could never touch that.
I see a lot of people having black eyed peas, is that a New Year's tradition?

Yeah I think Black Eyed peas must be a southern thing..that and collard greens too. My Dad was southern and he taught my mom how to cook all those things...and as far as head cheese, totally gross but my dad use to eat that too..but not on New Years day..all throughout the year...I would never touch that stuff.

I've never fixed it myself so I don't know. I know my great aunt use to rinse it but I don't know how many times.

I like brussel sprouts cooked in bacon fat so maybe I should try cooking sauerkraut that way.
