I can totally understand why some folks don't like the holiday (and sorry Maureen for your experience, truly a shame the way some folks are).

In my case I love it. Just another opportunity to revisit childhood. As in any case, Halloween, Christmas, etc, is what you make it...you don't have to go with any preconceived norm or notion...reclaim it for the way you want it.

When I was little I remember having to wear the same costume for years! (My parents made me) I hated it but I loved Halloween so I would try to not let that dampen my spirits. It wasn't until I was10 or 11 that I finally got to start wearing different costumes. 14 was the last year I went trick or treating. I don't mind the teens coming for treats at my door...so long as they wear a costume. If some come without one (or so it might appear to me) I ask them what they are going to be. I will even give extra candy for unique costumes. Like one girl made her own as a banana. She was happy when I did and told her why for the extra. Perhaps it will be incentive to be creative again. :)
When I was a teen and no longer did the trick or treating I did feel bummed. Trying to find things to do. But I would always try to dress up every year. That did help and I would find ways to make it better. I didn't want to ruin Halloween as I loved it so much as a kid.
Now that I have kids it's alot more fun and so I get right into it and make it fun for them as well as for me. :) And because they are young I don't make it too scary or gory...which I prefer anyway. :)

Halloween has always been fun for me both as a child and adult. It's fun to be scared and scare others in a fun way. Not to mention being creative.

I think it's a time to make fun of what scares us even though we know that Halloween characters don't really exist. It's making fun of silly superstitions.

Definitely don't do the gorey crap. That's not fun at all.:coffin:

I am not crazy about Halloween, but I think its exciting for the kids. I like to give out candy and see how excited the kids get. I dont decorate for halloween at all. But my kids grew up to enjoy the trick-or-treat part of it. Some people go all out and I really enjoy their displays. I agree with what most of you all said, 'its what you make of it". You can decorate with cute stuff and not gorey stuff. But it just doesnt interest me to decorate/celebrate. I enjoy watching how others celebrate and enjoy. So I guess technically I am still celebrating. Just in my own way.
:scarykitty:

I am like what a lot of you have mentioned. I am not into the gore either. There are LOTS of nice Halloween decorations without gore and that is how I decorate. :pumpkin:

To be honest, even though my wife loves it, I am totally indifferent to it myself. I don't even remember getting all that excited about it as a kid. I used to dress up and do the trick or treating thing, but it wasn't a big deal to me. My birthday is just a few days after (Nov.4) maybe that's why, I had more important things on my mind.cheesy

I love it! In our old neighborhood, we got a lot of ADULTS who would dress up and try to come by multiple times for candy... go buy your own, I'd tell them! And it was just a madhouse in the city at Halloween. Now that we've moved back to my hometown, I am soooo excited! The neighborhood is very walkable with tons of kids and so many people decorate. I love being outside in the crisp air and the candy adds to the fun!!! :pumpkin:

But you always join in on my enthusiasm for the day and you like watching It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown with me every year. :pumpkin: That's all that matters to me. =)

I like Halloween for my boys, but the holiday itself I do not like, I will decorate the house and the yard but I use it as "practice" for the Christmas decorations.
It does seem that to many people focus on the gore, which I don't like, I don't even watch horror movies.

I like the idea of practicing for Christmas decorations! I do look forward to all the horror movies, though!

:boo:I was one of those who didn't believe in it for a while. It was because we were in a very dogamtic, legalistic, false-teaching church. All that did was rob our two oldest children of some of the innocent joy that they could have had for a couple of years.

After our "escape" from that church and teachings, we have handed out candy, took our children trick or treating, and decorate to a very small degree. Being a lover of animated Christmas lighting, I did the animated lighting for Halloween for the first time last year.

I still don't like the darker, gory kind of Halloween stuff, but to each their own. Like many other commenters here, I believe it's what's in your heart and what you make of it that matters.

We're trying to do a Harry Potter theme this year to correspond to the release of the new movie. I'm going to be Mad Eye Moody, my wife - Dolores Umbridge, Noel - Tonks, and Dan - Harry Potter or Vodemort.

the harry potter theme sounds great....I am glad for You, that You "escaped" from that certain church

LOL Denise! Dress the Dupes up and take her around :)
When I lived in a neighborhood that had kids trick or treating I used to take her to some of the neighbors and they would give her doggie treats!!! hahaha!!!! She loved it. I should start it this year in the apartment complex.

Im not a fan of Halloween at all. I dont know if its because its not that much of a big deal where i live or what but ive just never been into it. I prefer the happier time like christmas or easter. Although i do put a pumpkin in the window of our house with a candle inside and a scary face cut into it. Also if children come to the door trick or treating i do give out treats left right and centre ( not wanting to be a kill joy) .

All in all, Halloween.....na, not for me!

hi halloween to me is another milestone to christmas
over there in northern ireland we dont really go to town a lot
yes the kids dress up and so do some adults
the kids go door to door and get sweets. apples or money
but i have noticed this past years that is starting to getting less and less
usually in some of the bars there is a halloween ball where adults go and there.s usually a prize for best dressed
i do put up a few decorations up to about 5 years ago you wood not hardly have got a halloween decoration
our town has a fire works display each year which last about 15 minutes
When i was a kid we use to play halloween games .ducking for apples
but i go with flow now i do dress up. with a few mates but as i said over there after halloween everyone starts thinking about christmas
:snowball:

:hair:OK, OK... WOW... I must live in a bubble, someone stick it with a pin... I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Halloween, but as someone else said here I love every holiday for it's own special reasons. A few years ago I did a piece on Halloween I should post it to my blog (in fact I think I will). Halloween to me represents a day we all can be silly in our own way. If I am working that day I take it off, and not to toot my own horn but my Condo is the "IT" condo for Trick-or-Treat. I have decorations a "spooky village" but not gory - I think it is geared more for kids. I have pumpkins, ghosts, witches, and black kitties. I have Frankenstein & a mummy. But, it really is cute. Oh I should not forget to tell you about Mr. Skinny Bones, now he has a real toothy smile. Music plays and a fog machine blows, I have tomb-stones that read silly things like "here lies Mr. French Fry, he's now resting in my belly" Silly things... The bats all have smiley faces and the Count never sucks your blood (we made a deal - tee hee). I dress up and give out so much candy. The children love it, I have been in my community for 10 years now and I have watched the young ones grow up and some take younger siblings now, and they tell me how it wouldn't be Halloween if it wasn't for Ms. Laurie's place, that makes me happy. It doesn't bother me when the "older" ones come I think it is sweet that they still want to do it, I know I wanted to when I started to get older so why not let them as long as they do not harm anything. I do not have children, nor did I really get to trick-or-treat when I was younger. But, I have always thought if you close yourself off to something you might never know what joy or love you can get from it. Like, me not having little ones of my own I would not really get to see all the adorable little ones that come by and laugh and smile by my display. I am a firm believer in Halloween, what it offers is what you make of it. I embrace yet another time of the year we get to give and give and give, weather it be a treat or a tick well now that is up to you my spooky friends (tee hee).:boo:

Dislike Hallowe'en? What?! Sorry, does not compute.

Love me some Hallowe'en; scary and sweet!
:pumpkin:
