Z-96.3 The Lake Unearths the Underground for a Three-Hour Halloween Night Radio Special

Halloween-Underground-Radio-Special.png

GLEN ELDER — Prepare to lock your doors and turn down the lights. This Saturday, October 31st at 9:00 PM, Z-96.3 The Lake is trading its usual daytime rotation for a dive into the shadows with the upcoming Alt Rewind Radio Halloween Special.

Hosted by Derek Nester, the three-hour musical excursion promises a hand-curated journey through post-punk, goth, and dark alternative classics. Eschewing predictable holiday party novelty tracks, Nester’s broadcast leans heavily into the moody, atmospheric underground sounds of the 1980s and beyond.

“We’ve got goth, post-punk, dark alternative, and a few things that go bump in the night,” Nester notes. “No glossy Halloween party soundtrack here. We’re going a little deeper — into the music that made the underground feel like its own world.”

Three Hours of Sonic Shadows

Divided into three distinct thematic hours—The Haunting Begins, Into the Darkness, and Midnight Underground—the special spans a massive collection of underground royalty:

  • Hour 1 (9:00 PM – 10:00 PM): Sets the mood with tracks like The Cure’s “Charlotte Sometimes,” Echo & the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon,” Bauhaus’s “Dark Entries,” and Concrete Blonde’s “Bloodletting (The Vampire Song)”.
  • Hour 2 (10:00 PM – 11:00 PM): Deepens the transmission with the definitive goth-rock epic “Bela Lugosi’s Dead” by Bauhaus, alongside offerings from Killing Joke, The Sisters of Mercy, Ministry (“Everyday Is Like Halloween”), and Joy Division.
  • Hour 3 (11:00 PM – Midnight): Rounds out the witching hour with tunes from The Cramps, Love and Rockets, The Specials (“Ghost Town”), and a closing meditation with The Mission’s “Sacrilege”.

Zombies, jack-o’-lanterns, and our spooky scary skeletons

From: New Hampshire Public Radio
Series: Outside/In
Length: 28:00

No, your 3,000 pound pumpkin will not taste good.

On a recent fishing trip, Nate came across a bone-chilling sight. It was a salmon that seemed kind of… dead. Its skin was falling off, it smelled horrible, and it didn’t have any eyes. Turns out, Nate had stumbled onto a (barely) living example of a recent listener question: “Are there any real-life zombies?”

From mutant looking fish to the science behind mysterious lights that flicker in cemeteries, in this Outside/Inbox roundup the team takes on your Halloween curiosities.

Celebrate Halloween with special programming from Robert Drake and Eric Schuman

We’re in the thick of spooky season. Well, at least for about 48 more hours as of this publication. But while the autumn air is rife with specters and the streets filled with ghouls and goblins, we’re getting in on the Halloween fun.

This weekend we have two special Halloween programs in store for you ghastly listeners.

From 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, we’ll be broadcasting Land of the Lost Presents: The Dark Side of New Wave with host Robert Drake.

“Traditionally one of the most popular specials inside the Land of the Lost is my trip into the Dark Side of New Wave,” Drake said. “Dedicating multiple hours each October to celebrate the early goth, dark wave sounds from the late ’70s and early ’80s is a scream in the most satisfying way! What I love most is how many Losties also get into the spirit each year—with candlelight listening parties, spooky cocktail concoctions and an abundance of eyeliner!”

Then, on Halloween itself, “Inhuman” Eric Schuman is hosting our Halloween SPOOKtacular.

From 7 p.m. Saturday to 1 a.m. Sunday, the Indie Rock Hit Parade host will serve as your spirit guide, digging up strange and unusual sounds from his personal Halloween music crypt. And, Schuman program will feature a one-of-a-kind radio presentation of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in the midnight hour. Bring your own toast and toilet paper, and listen if you dare!

Tune in to 88.5 FM to hear our Halloween programming live! No radio handy? Stream the shows using the player on any WXPN webpage!
