It was nearly 2am when she awoke to the sound of static on the TV. For a moment, she sleepily wondered why she was on the couch, and what had awakened her. A slight rustling in the hallway behind the couch brought the previous night's terror to the front of her mind with a start.
 
She once again found herself gripped by paralyzing fear. Her body refused to operate on any level, except those basic functions such as heart-pumping and breathing. And those two autonomic functions were working overtime at the moment.
 
Shaken from her paralysis by the fast moving police vehicle with its lights and sirens blaring whisking by her home, her fear and paranoia began to intensify. What could possibly be happening at this hour? Could that police cruiser be responding to a home intrusion? Was her home broken into the previous night? Susan resided herself to being awake the rest of the night and sat quietly through until morning, wondering if this is all a spate of coincidences or the onset of something sinister...
 
The next morning there was nothing on the local news. It still bothered her that in the time she has lived in this quiet sleepy little town that she has never seen or heard late night police activity. She brought it up with Julia during their morning coffee, but Julia said she was fast asleep through the night and wasn't aware of anything. Susan, needing a break from her misgivings, decided to set about town and run some errands, meanwhile, briefly mentioning and asking some people she knows about the police car she saw...
