Warm Flutes & Fender Rhodes: Thanksgiving Music

From: WRCJ-FM
Series: The Soundtrack
Length: 59:00

This week on The Soundtrack, host Haley Taylor celebrates Thanksgiving with a twist—by chasing the sound of the holiday. Not turkey, not family dramas, but that nostalgic, funky, slightly off-beat sound tucked into 1970s TV specials, warm flutes, Fender Rhodes keyboards, and Guaraldi-style grooves. From A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving to deep cuts by Blossom Dearie, Bob James, Donald Byrd, Carole King, and Herbie Mann, this isn’t your average holiday playlist. It’s a cozy, curious journey into the music that feels like fall—full of memory, warmth, and a little weirdness. No jingle bells, no Monster Mash. Just pure Thanksgiving vibes.

Thursday, November 27 – Thanksgiving Day

9am: Marketplace: Feeding the Family
This holiday season, Marketplace brings listeners a collection of stories on the business and economics of food. From rising grocery bills to farm fields, we’re breaking down what’s really shaping the meals on your table.

10am: The Splendid Table’s Turkey Confidential
Turkey Confidential is The Splendid Table’s annual Thanksgiving show. Francis Lam takes calls and comes to the rescue of Thanksgiving cooks, kitchen helpers, and dinner guests during the biggest cooking day of the year.

11am: The Turducken
Three family shows come together for a holiday celebration. Sit down for an hour-long family dinner with Terrestrials, Wow! in the World, and Circle Round as we dig into our very own Turducken: three stories stuffed deliciously inside of each other, just like the chicken, inside the duck, inside the turkey. Follow the story of a chicken who ran away and spent two months navigating the wilds of Germany to find her way back home. Meet researchers aboard a vessel listening for whale songs in the middle of the Arctic Ocean who heard something a little strange. Is that a duck in the Arctic? And let’s go back to the time of legend when Turkey couldn’t talk and find out where “gobble gobble” came from.

Noon: Every Good Thing
Host Andrea Blain and classical music fans from all around the country take time to give thanks and celebrate one of life’s most meaningful gifts: music. It’s Every Good Thing — an hour of stories and music to celebrate Thanksgiving.
1pm: A Musical Thanksgiving Feast (2 Hours)
Thanksgiving is a time when we gather with family and friends to give thanks for precious memories and traditions. This holiday season, we’re giving thanks with a combination of the finest food-centric songs from Jazz, Soul, Rock and Pop Standards legends.

7pm: Shadowglow: Thanksgiving with the American Sound
An hour of music celebrating the special radiance of autumn and the richness of the holiday—music inspired by the uncanny fire of starlight, the hopeful warmth of luminaria, the lamps of gratitude we light within ourselves, even the golden glow of beloved Thanksgiving treats fresh from the oven.
8pm: Feasting with the Great American Songbook: An Afterglow Thanksgiving Special
On this Afterglow special, we’re going to chow down on some food-related songs from the Great American Songbook. Ahead this hour, we’ll hear some odes to beans, cornbread, meat, and potatoes by some guys named Louis. Louis Jordan, Louis Armstrong, and Louis Prima, that is. Nat King Cole will also get in on the food-song fun. And we’ll hear a few songs saluting feasting together at home, sung by Kay Starr and Cab Calloway.

Friday, November 28

Noon & 8pm: No Small Endeavor Holiday Special 2025: Practices of Hope
When the headlines numb and the culture wars grind us down, what if hope isn’t a mood at all—but a practice you can do with your body, your friends, and your city?

In this holiday special, we revisit four conversations to find practices of hope: meditation teacher Tara Brach on healing the “trance of unworthiness,” songwriter Tom Paxton on the folk community that fueled social change, marine biologist Ayana Elizabeth Johnson on climate imagination, and educator Sharon McMahon on everyday civic action. Together they offer three grounded practices—for self, for community, and for the common good—that help us act toward a more beautiful future.

High-Desert Thanksgiving Drifter
From: Desert Oracle
Series: Desert Oracle Radio

Snowy mountaintops across the Western Mojave, all the transverse ranges have at least a dusting, with the big peaks covered in white. WHRO-FM: From the Eve to the Feast—Your Thanksgiving Programming

As we head into the holiday, WHRO-FM is here to guide you through both Thanksgiving Eve and Thanksgiving Day with programs rooted in community, gratitude, and the rich musical traditions you love.

This Wednesday at 9 p.m. on WHRO-FM, “A Local Touch – Music with a Virginia Connection” invites listeners to a rich and varied musical program, perfectly timed for the night before Thanksgiving.

Raymond Jones will open the evening with a performance by Viva Vivaldi, the ensemble from Hollins University in Roanoke. Their “Turkey” Concerto by Vivaldi features lively, unpredictable rhythms, especially in the final movement, which earned it its humorous nickname.

Next up, we’ll hear “Melodious Accord” from the Master Chorale of Washington under the direction of Donald McCullough, well-known for being the founder of both the Virginia Chorale and the Virginia Symphony Chorus in Norfolk. This album features shape-note hymns arranged by Alice Parker, who also served as a special conductor for the recording.

And in a nod to classic Virginia rivalries, we’ll have the marching bands from the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech, a perfect musical prelude to Saturday’s big game.

For a more contemplative moment, the Williamsburg Presbyterian Chancel Choir, directed by Robert Page, performs selections from Brahms’s “German Requiem,” highlighting both the choral tradition in Williamsburg and the depth of Virginia’s sacred music heritage.

This musical menu offers something for everyone: from Baroque energy in Roanoke to heartfelt choral reflections in Williamsburg, and even the enthusiasm of collegiate marching bands.

And as you move into Thanksgiving Day, WHRO-FM will continue to provide your holiday soundtrack, with warm, joyful programs from your favorite local hosts throughout the day, plus these special broadcasts:

9:00 a.m. – Every Good Thing from American Public Media
