River Carry Me Home: Thanksgiving with the American Sound

Rivers are special, many even considered sacred. They carry rain from fields and replenish the sea. They wander as watery conduits from one point to another, sometimes even between exile and home. Like rivers, our lives, too, are wandering—and as the 17th-century Japanese wandering poet Bashō wrote, the journey itself is home. As we gather with family and friends this Thanksgiving, enjoy an hour of music that reaches the heart of what it means to wander through the world like a river carving its course, and what it means to come home.

I know what you're saying, "What about the annual show "Giving Thanks" hosted by John Birge?"

John Birge has retired from his daily classical music show.

From an article about Birge on Your Classical Radio Show:

...Indeed, Birge is likely best known for the morning gig, but additional duties have included putting together Composers Datebook, billed as a daily snapshot of composers past and present, and holiday specials, most notably Giving Thanks.

The Thanksgiving staple had its roots in Birge’s WGUC days. “ ‘Giving Thanks’ was my passion project,” he says, “and it originally addressed practical aspects of Thanksgiving morning – what do you play? I was trying to come up with a playlist that would match the mood of the day. People are listening in the kitchen, while they’re putting turkey or pies in the oven, or in the car, on a three-hour drive to grandma’s.

“So I started assembling music that I felt addressed gratitude in some special way, or something that addressed things I felt thankful for – nature, especially, but also music about food, poems I liked about food.”

The special became nationally syndicated in 1999, giving Birge leeway to bring in special guests. Because he had incorporated the spoken word into the musical mix, he had an epiphany. “Why should I read a Billy Collins poem, when I could get Billy Collins on the show? That was the direction the show took. Every year a featured guest was brought in to talk about gratitude, like [actor] Stanley Tucci about his love for food and cooking. That’s how the show evolved, 25 years of it.”...

Somewhat of a departure here

Pigs

From: Cam Marston
Series: Keepin' It Real with Cam Marston - Short interstitial content.
Length: 03:55

Ahead of a Thanksgiving ham dinner at his father's Clarke County cabin, Cam traces Alabama's wild hog population back to pigs abandoned on islands by early explorers—then heads into the woods after the meal hoping to shoot a distant, ill-fated cousin of what he just ate.

This is about pigs. It’s timely since many of us pair Thanksgiving turkey with a ham.

Wild hogs roam the woods near my father’s camp in Clarke County — some possibly descendants of hogs early explorers left on islands as a future food source, later making their way to the mainland. Columbian pigs. Mayflower pigs.

Admiring wild hogs is taboo here — they’re hell on property. But they’re a remarkable species, surviving and propagating no matter the circumstances, dropping litters of up to ten piglets.

And they’re tasty. A blue cheese stuffed pork chop at K-Paul’s in New Orleans nearly made me faint in bliss.

Then there’s the Thanksgiving ham, magically cut in circles, iridescent in the light. Later that day, after a nap, I’ll step into the woods with a rifle, hoping to take down a distant cousin of the ham I just ate. It’s all a bit gross and weird and magical at the same time.

And that’s all I got to say about that.

I’m Cam Marston and I’m just trying to Keep It Real. Happy Thanksgiving.

0n a personal note, wild hogs are in Northwest Alabama as well. When I encounter them walking on a nearby trail, they are very scary, looking and acting! They just stand and stare. The dogs don't even move to interact with the hogs!
