Coming soon to MMC is a new feature that has literally been years in the making.
It's not a podcast and it is not a broadcast. But it mingles together the work of the Merry Podcast with Kringle Radio.
I'm calling it the Christmas Show of MyMerryChristmas.
I have for some time been fending off questions about why there have not been new episodes of the Merry Podcast that have been produced. The answer to that is quite complicated and I'd be lying if I did not admit the answers are also very personal.
Like everyone else, I've been through a lot the past several years.
But I cannot lean on that as the sole reason. There are other factors at play with this.
I have not been very happy with the evolution of Christmas podcasting. Most podcasters out there are genuine and well-meaning. It was exciting for a time to welcome them and to enjoy their creativity.
But as with all things online, Christmas podcasting changed to the level of....um....people thinking they were important. So much of what they put out is about them and each other...and not about Christmas.
It only takes a few rotten onions to ruin the stew and by no means am I trying to label any Christmas podcaster with a broad brush. There are many I like and still follow.
I just don't want to be one of them.
I know I am not the only one who feels this way. I have had many sideline conversations with others who have soured on that segment online. It's not too unlike what has happened to Christmas movies and, to a lesser degree, what has happened to Christmas music. There are just too many profiteers amongst the actual creators, those who would rather shill than present something fresh.
So....The Christmas Show is a new effort to set us apart.
First, The Christmas Show will be exclusive to MyMerryChristmas.
It always grated on me to produce a podcast and have to shove it on a platform like Apple or Facebook to get it heard. Imagine my shock when I was trying to share something with a friend and brought up the Merry Podcast only to hear commercials added to it by a podcast platform that had no hand it it's creation. (And what they were advertising was offensive TO ME....and it annoyed me to be associated with anything other than MMC).
So....The Christmas Show will only be found here and you won't be able to download it. (You might coerce me to share the file with you personally because we're, well, friends).
We don't need platforms or social media to share Christmas.
We're MyMerryChristmas. We're 34 years old this year. We have more traffic in a day than most podcasters can dream of in a year and we have a better, more diverse Christmas than any social media channel can provide.
The Christmas Show is being produced under license with Kringle Radio - a resource we pay dearly for. As such, we are exercising our rights under copyright to use music in our show. The real stuff.
Music is a very important element of Christmas. As you have heard me say before the Heavenly Hosts at the Nativity were not shouting the Glad Tidings. They were singing them.
We will have music. We need it.
That being said, we have long invited and embraced the independent artist and their music.
We will continue to seek them out and FREELY promote them. If they are kind enough to share their art we will gladly share who they are and spread that love.
But we will NOT be paid for anything by anyone.
Yes, we have a few ads on our websites to help Santa's Sleigh. But The Christmas Show is not for sale. It is being presented in the spirit of how we began - commercial-free.
So when we share music it will be because we want to share it with you, not because people paid us to do it. The same goes with interviews (if we do them) or talking about products or movies or whatever. Not a dime will be accepted (as ever).
Now...what's going to be different about The Christmas Show?
I don't know entirely....but come and see.
I've given this a lot of thought. I've given it a lot of time.
But here's what I hope happens: I hope The Christmas Show becomes like the Merry Forums - defined by YOU.
I want your ideas. Your questions. Your thoughts. Even your participation.
We have done that before. Merry Carey, JayIsh and others have produced outstanding features for us. Glenn Warren has his own podcast with Seasons Eatings and he's long been one of us.
But it can happen more. It can happen better.
Truth be told, I don't want to define The Christmas Show. I want you to define it and to add your voice, your art, your take and your Christmas passion to it.
The debut of The Christmas Show will happen soon. I hope we can make a party of it.
