Peeps Won't Be Making Halloween Or Christmas Shaped Marshmallows This Year Due To COVID-19

As fall gets closer, we've had to accept all of the upcoming holidays are set to look a little different than we're used to thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic. One of the first confirmations of that is the news that we won't have any Halloween or Holiday Peeps to look forward to in stores this year. UGH.

Instagrammer @JunkFoodMom posted this news earlier this week via a notice on the Blair Candy website, saying that Just Born, the company behind Peeps, informed them that they wouldn't be releasing any new Christmas or Halloween Peeps in 2020 because of the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on their operations.

Their statement reads:

While PEEPS® Marshmallow Candies, MIKE AND IKE® and HOT TAMALES® would typically be available in fun shapes and packaging sizes for the Halloween and holiday seasons, unfortunately, the seasonal varieties will not be in stores again until 2021. As you may know, due to the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic, we temporarily suspended production of our candy brands to ensure the health and safety of our associates. In early May, we resumed limited production after making extensive changes in our plant that ensure the safety of our associates. This situation resulted in us having to make the difficult decision to forego production of our seasonal candies for Halloween, Christmas and Valentine’s Day in order to focus on meeting the expected overwhelming demand for PEEPS® for next Easter season, as well as our everyday candies.

The temporary closure mentioned in the statement refers to production being halted at Just Born back in March as COVID-19 hit the United States. That pause in production did not have any affect on the 2020 Easter season and it seems Just Born has taken this step to ensure it will not affect 2021's Easter Peeps supply either.

"We look forward to offering our fun seasonal shapes and packaging at all major seasons again beginning with Halloween of 2021," the statement concluded. "We appreciate your interest in Just Born’s iconic candy brands, and we look forward to being a part of seasonal traditions again next year! We have been bringing sweetness to people’s lives since 1923, and we hope to continue to do so for many years to come."

Obviously this one hurts, but safety first!! Think about it, this will just make the first Peep of 2021 taste even sweeter.
