I’ll Be Home For Christmas Day

Today is I’ll Be Home for Christmas Day. On this date way back in 1943 Bing Crosby recorded the now classic song with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra. Written from the perspective of the away-from-home-for-the-first-time soldier, the song expresses the wishes of one far from home and family who only longs to be home for Christmas, “if only in my dreams”. Written on the heels of “White Christmas” at a time when the music-listening generations of 18 year olds were marching off to war the song was destined to become a hit.
The song became Crosby’s fifth gold record and became the most requested song on USO tours.
Not everyone loved the song, however. The BBC banned the song for a time from being played because of fears it would lower morale of British troops.
In the decades since the song has come to represent the feelings of anyone away from home for Christmas and has continued to see success in recordings from all kinds of musical artists.
