Why You Need to Sign Up to the Christmas Card Exchange Before Halloween
The Annual Christmas Card Exchange at My Merry Christmas is a beloved tradition that is simply the best there is online. While we have set the date of November 22nd as the last day to sign up we are encouraging folks to sign up before Halloween.
Why?
Because our process is what makes the list work so well every year. Here is what you need to know about it:
- It’s a premiere member activity. As a premiere member of My Merry Christmas you get a number of benefits, including the opportunity to participate in the exchange. Why does it cost money to do this? Well, it’s pretty simple. If you invest a little in it you’ll participate fully. Nobody here is making money off of premiere memberships. We put every dime right into the coffers of Santa’s Sleigh, our little community effort to give back every Christmas. This isn’t about money FOR US. It’s about others. Which, coincidentally, is what the Christmas Card Exchange is all about.
- Right after Halloween we send out a preview list to everyone who is signed up. This isn’t intended to send cards from. It’s a review process. It is a chance to make sure the information you submitted is correct. If there is an error we have plenty of time to fix it before we close the list.
- It is a predictable routine every year with the Annual Christmas Card Exchange. We announce it as part of Christmas in July and we get a rash of sign-ups right away. These usually come from the same people every year. They love the exchange and want to be part of it every year. So they are all over it. Then comes the lonely period from August through the end of October, where we put the word out but we do not get many sign-ups. Then, Halloween hits. The day after, everyone who isn’t signed up that wants to be realizes it is November. Then we get another flood of sign-ups. Unfortunately, the second flood happens after the review list is sent out. What does that mean? It means we get a few names and addresses that go by unreviewed.
- The last 24 hours before we close the list we get a micro-flood of people who decide they want to join. If there is a mistake on our list, this is when they happen – by people rushing and not getting information in completely.
- We stick to our deadlines. By sending the list out a few days before Thanksgiving we are giving people around the world who participate a chance to get their cards in the mail. Cards coming from Europe or the South Pacific take time to reach their destination. So we close the list and send it out precisely when we say we do.
- Every year we get people who try to sign up past the deadline. And every year we have to say, sorry – wait til next year.
The Christmas Card Exchange follows this pattern every year and it works well. We always get a quality list and nearly everyone fully participates.
So you want to bring this cherished tradition in to your Christmas act now. Right now. Before Halloween, before the first review list gets sent out.
You will have a memorable experience. I have been exchanging cards with everyone on this list for years and years now and I just love hearing from everyone and having their cards decorate my home.
You will love it too. So please don’t put it off.

This has become a tradition for me. It’s honestly one of my favorites. I look so forward to exchanging cards. I have an entire wall dedicated to Christmas cards from MMC. It makes my whole family happy!
