GOOD CHEEZEWHIZ 1157 pages. WOW!!!!! 77 days to go and I am so excited right now.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our Canadian friends and family.
:carve:

Good evening all,

Just finally checking in for the day, been busy again, back to work at noon tomorrow where I finally got the schedule of my turkey deliveries which begin this upcoming week. We will get our first shipments of the season somewhere around 5-7% of 1000 cases of turkeys for Thanksgiving. So I will be living in the freezer for the next 6 weeks brrrrrrr! Tomorrow begins the Tyler Seguin era for the Boston Bruins, I cannot wait been looking forward to hockey season since it ended last year.

Have a good night!

It has been a long day and I am exhausted. I need to get some sleep so I can spend all day tomorrow at the festival again. Goodnight Everyone!!!!!!!!!!

I had to respond to this...

My humble opinion....American education needs to begin evolving from it's roots. Traditional classrooms being teacher led (lecturing non-stop) with all the kids in rows (in a factory type setting) with our out-dated schedule of when school starts and stops (based upon farming and harvest from 50 years ago) has long been outdated. There is much research that suggests kids lose a lot of what they gained and spend the first two months of school getting back what was lost. From that standpoint, we need to take a serious look at what we are doing and how we do it. This goes from the low-level, knowledge based questions we ask our kids to the high stakes testing that we are moving towards now. Every facet of the American educational system should constantly be examined if we hope to keep America relevant in generations to come and if we hope to allow our students to be competitive in a global economy which is rapidly advancing.

As a homeschooling parent of seven children I have to say AMEN!!!

Too many societal issues have overtaken our teachers too. Too many of them just can't teach and we're losing more and more dedicated talent in our schools who are passionate about their craft simply because they cannot apply it.

This year we started, after homeschooling for years with some of our younger kids having never set foot in a public school, an online charter school.

The program is fantastic. First, they assessed the kids and we were relieved to learn that all of them were on their level and well prepared for the years ahead. Without that available to you, you never know really how you're doing. Even better though, the program gave us all we needed -- books, supplies, computers, etc. It isn't perfect but it is much better than what we could purchase on our own.

The kids are busy five to six hours a day between online and offline activity -- all very personalized. We have access to teachers at all grade levels should we need them. And the kids love it.

I think online learning is one part of that future ballcoach is talking about. We can control the environment without all the typical social (i.e. non-academic distractions that fill our schools) problems and the kids stay enthused for learning. This, I am convinced, is where we are headed.

And yes, it has to be year round. This too we have done for years and we swear by it.

Jeff

Good Morning MMC !

Already have been shopping, local grocery store had a 3 hour sale from 7am to 10am with some amazing prices so we just had to go. What a lot of people there! (some of which where very rude, most of which where very nice)

Getting ready for our family Thanksgiving dinner that is scheduled for 5pm (which means we should be eating by 6:30! LOL)
I am in charge of the potatoes, some vegies and dessert.
:family::happyturkey:

Hope you all have a fantastic day!

I cannot wait until our Thanksgiving. Have a great day!

I have a question to my Canadian friends.

I see that Thanksgiving is on Monday October 11 but I see you all celebrate throughout the weekend. Some are celebrating today some on Monday, etc.

Is it a full weekend celebration or do most celebrate on Monday only?

The reason I ask is here in U.S.A. majority celebrate on the day itself, last Thursday of November. Not that some don't celebrate on other days but for the most part it's the actual day.

Just about everything closes down on Thanksgiving like it would on Christmas Day too. Does everything close down for the special day?

Just curious! I wish you all a wonderful weekend! :dancingturks:

Good Weekend Morning, Everyone!

Yes, yet another weekend has arrived along with yet another count figure:
Days to the Season: 35
Days to Christmas Day: 77
Ah! The Home Stretch!
What preparations are you making for the advent of the Season Nov 13, five short weeks from today?
Done any Christmas shopping?
Thinking about decorating ideas?
Planning that meal or party?
(Might not be a bad idea to start thinking in that direction. The Home Stretch moves fast, you know!)

Nice but cool morning here in Raleigh where we stand at 54 light-jacket-walkable degrees under calm, sunny skies.
The weather service predicts 80's for the next several days for highs.
Hey! Sounds like we are back in Summer again. (But with delightfully lower humidity)

OK! I hope each and every one of you has a Sensational Saturday!!
Don't forget that camera in your travels -- just in case an early Christmas-relate photo opportunity presents itself. We all want to see it in the Christmas Blossoms thread!

A quick note of correction for the sake of accuracy.
Thanksgiving here is actually celebrated on the 4th Thursday in November, not the last Thursday.
(In some years there are 5 Thursdays in the month but Thanksgiving is never celebrated on November 29th or 30th.)

Good morning everyone! It's a nice morning here today... suppose to warm up to about 70. I just put a homemade carrot cake in the oven. We have to go to my in-laws later today for my father in-laws birthday. The whole family will be there so it should be a nice day. Hope everyone has a wonderful day! :)

If we hope to engage children in the classroom, we need to begin engaging them in the manner they prefer.....technology. The devices and communication tools (texting) they use, ENJOY, and prefer.....we are too busy banning from schools. It just seems to me that we do things in school that adults prefer instead of what kids prefer. The secret to educating kids is getting them to buy in to what you are trying to do and make it enjoyable. I get sooooo tired of a traditional classroom because the kids are than they were 50 years ago. Heck, kids are different than they were 7 years, 5 years, and 3 years ago. Just frustrates me when we (educators) do what is easiest and most comfortable for us.

You would think I should know this being one of my favorite days of the year! cheesy Thanks for the clarification. =)

I agree! My daughter did very well through school. The setting was perfect for her.

On the other hand, my son didn't do well at all. He got bored very easy and the school wrote him off as A.D.D child. They talked us into seeing a doctor and he got put on medication which I regretted big time! It really messed with his health and he lost too much weight (he is thin anyway). I chose to take him off and the school kinda got onto me. I refused to put him back on it. Years later I find out he has a heart condition and the medication could have really hurt him. Medication may work for some children but not all. Didn't help my son at all.

I kept thinking if they had other ways to learn it might hold the child's attention. They all have different learning styles. A child can learn if it is taught in their style. My son was trying too but it was very difficult for him. No matter what grade my son came home with I told him he is smart and to not give up.

I do feel bad for teachers in public schools though. They have a certain curriculum to follow and I am sure it's hard to handle kids like the way my son was. I really got along with his teachers and we worked hard together but my son still struggled.

Now that my son is in college and learning what he loves he is holding a 4.0 grade average. His teachers even encourage to learn in a style that works best for them. It has helped him a lot! He is not on any medication either and doing well. I am very proud of him! cheesy

That is because here we get a long weekend, many having both the Friday and the Monday off. Yes, thanksgiving is on Monday, but we celebrate on the day when we can get the most family members together!
On Thanksgiving day just about everything closes down here as well.
Us Canadians are more reserved though and do not go crazy in the stores the next day, LOL! cheesy

"The Wife", Mom, and I are about to head out to go halloween and Christmas shopping. We are also going to visit Hobby Lobby. So between football, Christmas shopping, and the nap I plan to take today, I'm going to have a great one. I hope you get to do what you want on this wonderful Saturday!
