Speaking for myself and possibly Bradmac too...we feel left out!! everyone is getting the winter weather..Even CAH in tx is getting in on it. but I have to say I am glad I am not driving in that mess and have to deal with what most of y'all are..but a flake or two would not hurt! everyone stay safe!

We do have a fireplace that is real and works very nicely !!

I hope all are well. I hope all who are ill or were feeling ill will be better soon !!! My furchildren are all here with me at the fireplace !! Nice and cozy !!

Take care Christmas family !! xo

I don't have a fireplace but I told my neighbors if we lose power I would build us a huge bonfire in the middle of the cornfield behind are apartments.

Hi all,

I know I haven't been around much this past month but I have been here, tinkering and working away on Christmas 2011. I did see in passing the following post and wanted to comment on it:

Well maybe sticking my head on a chopping block but noticed something of late on here that semi bothers me. I do enjoy seeing many different people post on here, what all are up to, sharing thoughts and so on. And I like seeing a record number of members doing so. But if it’s just numbers we want then I can sit here and post nothing but three or four words or tell a story three words at a time all night long and get us to maybe even 5000 mark. If I had got busy half an hour ago could easily have gotten us to 4000 for January. To me it is all about the quality of the conversation in the posts not the number of posts.

First of all, thanks to superdave1225 for speaking up. That's the spirit of MMC.

For a moment I want to interject some thoughts from on high here that deviate just a bit from my norm and from what is generally posted here.

If there is one thread I receive continual feedback about it is this one.

Generally, folks love it and are drawn to the friendships made here. Many try to join mid-conversation and, lacking background, soon find themselves in over their heads because they don't understand the history nor the nuances of everything said here.

Bet you didn't know you were so cryptic, eh?

Others, frankly, are afraid to join this thread because they feel they will never fit in. Of course, that's not true and I do my best to assure them that all are welcome here.

I even get emails or PMs about folks who read this thread and just don't get it. They say so it in so many words. I try my best to explain but usually my explanation leads to encouraging folks to just lurk for a while and observe -- then, they will get it.

And over the years this thread, which has largely become the heart and soul of our forums, has continued to grow.

We "count" out of fun and anticipation. From the days to this or that milestone to the actual number of posts we generate -- it is all for fun.

On that last point -- the number of posts -- I have to claim some responsibility.

It all started as a cursory thing -- Oh, wow! Look at how many posts this year! -- kind of thing. Just a fun, trivial thing, that's all. Last year I think we set and hit a target of some 12,000 posts and this year I set the bar at 20,000.

In the spirit of it all we might have gotten a bit carried away -- and actually hurt ourselves in the process.

This is what SuperDave, who is relatively new to the party here, is trying to tell us, I think.

And he's right.

We can all see the post count. And if we hit it, we hit it. Big deal, throw another log on the fire and propose another toast. But what does it really matter when all is said and done?

For me, as the concerned caretaker of these parts, the post count is nothing and completely unimportant compared to the number of folks who can come here and just enjoy themselves. That's the miracle of this thread -- not the increase in the number of posts but the increase in the number of diverse folks from all over who join the conversation.

Over the years we have worked very hard and even have endured debates behind the scenes as we have worked through issues that prevent this from being the welcoming place we've wanted it to be.

We have stuck our toes into shark infested waters of politics, religion and other divisive topics that generated more discontent than anything else.

And every time we have emerged wiser and more dedicated to keeping this little spot of the Internet from what cheapens so many other venues.

Ultimately, we're about Christmas, peace on earth, and share-and-share alike.

I would hope the spirit of SuperDave's observations are taken to heart.

If we want to increase the post count here we can do it by bringing more folks to the party and getting them to feel welcome and to participate.

I greatly appreciate all your contributions here.

I return you now to your regularly scheduled countdown to Christmas....

thanks,
Jeff

I would hate to think anyone would feel they would not fit in. I know most of us, including myself, see a new person post we acknowledge them and welcome them here. You can't have too many people in the countdown. It makes conversation fun and interesting! cheesy

Well I am back that didn't last long conditions here so bad we stopped till snow tapers off some and can see better. I almost hit several cars either from not being able to see them or them me. Please folks if you have to get out give the snow clearing people lots of room and come up on them slowly. We may not hear a horn honking over the machine noise as one man was screaming at me after he hit me when I was sitting still. Those of you my friends that are here in the midwest if you don't have to be out as in a matter of life and death, not a quart of milk, please stay home till we can get things cleared and open back up.
:snowball:

So I take it the groundhog will not see his shadow in Pa because of the inclimate weather!? what does no shadow mean again? I'm almost afraid to ask.lol

Well goodnight folks, I'm about to cook dinner for my visiting granny and visit with her the rest of the night! I hope everyone stays safe in the mega winter storm of 2011! talk to y'all tomorrow!

To Jeff and All at MMC,
I really debated before writing what I did. In fact I got out of bed came back to the office logged in and started to remove the post about 4am. But after leaving so many other forums I figured I would say what I was seeing and if it made people mad then I was out a few dollars and so be it. There is another well-known Christmas site as well and I belong to it but unless you are in with the” click” you are made to feel, well stupid. As well if your display is under 20,000 lights you are a nobody for sure. I have answered a few electrical questions only to be blasted by an outstanding member telling me I am wrong it won’t work leave posts as such to experienced members. Folks just so you know I am a Master Electrician as well as a few other things, and yes I will advise sometimes and yes will say no when I don’t know.

I sort of peeked around MMC after being exposed to it by shinybrite. It appeared to be a nice site so I decided to see about being a part of it. And the rest as they say is history.

One thing I seem to be bad about is speaking what is on my mind sometimes not to be hateful mind you, but to be factual or to get you to thinking. All my friends will tell you I am a wonderful supply of information or one who seems to know how to find it when it’s needed. But they will be quick to also warn you to never ask a question of me unless you really want the answer. It’s kind of like the old careful what you ask or pray for kind of thing.

I very much like the overall lay out of MMC think it’s a good site and my hat is off to Jeff and the gang who make MMC what it is. I do a lot of work around and with computers and understand a lot of it. Many maybe don’t realize how much it takes and overall work involved in running a site such as MMC. The larger it gets the more issues as well that can be had. There are not all that many of us posting in this thread and at same time be nice to hear what maybe 100 people had to say in a day’s time as well. But we all have to remember that we are not all the same nor do we all think the same. But I like that; it’s how I learn more each and every day, either by reading or listening to what people have to say. I got as smart as I am a lot on my own but as well a lot of it came from listening to my elders and my peers.
